Kas Saghafi (Assistant Professor of Philosophy, University of Memphis) presents Apparitions - of Derrida's Other, a thoughtful and scholarly assessment of Derrida's readings of Husserl, Levinas, Barthes, Blanchot, and Nancy, with particular emphasis on the theme of the relationship between the self and the other. Paying acute attention to the linguistic nuances of translation, Apparitions - of Derrida's Other assesses its central focus point by meticulous point. Apparitions - of Derrida's Other is an excellent analysis for advanced philosophy shelves, or any collection involving Derrida's works an ideas. "No monstrous figure can remain without shape for long, however, for there is a need to give it a form, to cloak it, cover it over, as all thinking of form has to do with wearing or donning an outer garment or veiling a naked core. About the Author

Curt Bartol earned a PhD in Personality/Social Psychology from Northern Illinois University. He was then a psychology professor for over 30 years, teaching a wide array of both graduate and undergraduate courses, including Criminal Behavior, Biopsychology, Social Psychology, Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Juvenile Delinquency, and Psychology and Law. He was instrumental in creating and launching a Master’s Program in Forensic Psychology at Castleton State College (now Castleton University) and served as its director for six years. He is a licensed clinical psychologist who has offered psychological services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and public safety offices for over 35 years. He was editor of the scholarly journal Criminal Justice and Behavior for 17 years.   

 

Anne Bartol earned an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.A. and PhD in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York at Albany. Over a 20-year college teaching career she taught criminal justice, sociology, and journalism courses, including Criminology, Juvenile Justice, Corrections, Women and Criminal Justice, Occupational Crime, and Media Law. She was managing editor of Criminal Justice and Behavior and has worked as a news reporter and a social worker in family and child protective services.

 

In addition to individual published articles in journals and encyclopedias, the Bartols have collaborated on and co-authored five books through multiple editions—with each subsequent edition carefully updated to reflect changes in data, research findings, theories, and law. Besides Criminal Behavior in its Eleventh Edition, they have written: Juvenile Delinquency (Third Edition, 2009); Psychology and Law (Third Edition, 2015); Introduction to Forensic Psychology (Fourth Edition, 2015); and Criminal and Behavioral Profiling (First Edition, 2013). They also have co-edited a book of readings, Current Perspectives in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Behavior (Fourth Edition, 2016).

Required reading for PSU Criminal Justice Course

Kindle version is very useful for using for class, as it supports full-text search - which is extremely useful during research for papers or open-book tests.

The content of the book... it's for class, so you have to get it.

In my opinion, however, the Bartol's seem to explain away all sense of personal responsibility for criminal acts - these criminals are never a criminal by choice - it's always some external factor that drove them to criminal behavior. Granted the book is a discussion of why criminals become criminals, in the process, it seems to skip over the fact that some people simply want to be one.

The Best Book on Shamanism

This is without doubt the best book on Shamanism I have ever read, even better than Eliade's famous one. My central interest is not shamanism but divination and early ways of thought. I had felt I needed to have a better understanding of Shamanism and so picked up this book after I met the author at a conference.

It's primary focus is modernized versions of shamanism but one learns about original forms because of the author's considerable knowledge of the subject. He is sympathetic to modernized versions such as Harner's "Core Shamanism" but always makes clear how this version has been greatly altered to fit the interests and lifestyle of modern Westerners.

For anyone interested in Shamanism this book is the best possible start; experts too will learn from it.

I give this my highest recommendation.

Very Well Thought Out Take on Sahamanism

Probably every serious book on Shamanism is going to be written in relation to Eliade's famous "Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy." The Beauty of the Primitive is nothing different in that regard. What is difference is that this author is a Russian and he knows about the history of Shaman studies in Siberia, and that makes all the difference. He points out how Eliade, who was himself an "armchair scholar" incorporated accounts of early Russian "scholars" who were often political exiles first, and anthropologists only because they were stuck in the middle of Siberia. The success of this book lies in the linkage of Siberian shamanism studies to the rise of North American Native American Shamanism, and then, in a neat final chapter, he shows how these neo-Shamans have gone back to Siberia to "help" Native people rediscover their shamanic heritage. Alll along, he writes with humor and affection, and I quite enjoyed this book because of it.

I couldn't agree more with this succinct analysis of Znamenski's text. It's a fascinating read for those who are both involved in, and curious about, modern shamanic activities and practices. I have been involved in shamanism for over 15 years and was always curious to gain the same academic insight that is so easily obtainable on the world of Buddhism, on shamanism too. This is the only text that I have found to so clearly highlight the developments and origins of neo-shamanism. Highly recommended. And although academic in scope and origin, it is highly accessible, highly readable and highly entertaining.
