From School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—Spradlin's latest foray into the fictional past revolves around two brothers who board the U.S.S. Indianapolis having already led more dramatic lives than many readers will have ever known. Searching for parents that may or may not be alive, Patrick, the elder of the two brothers, must fight to keep the pair alive with help from the wisdom and guidance of Benny, a tough Marine with a gentle side. The events turn from bad to worse to worst as sharks and Marines fight for survival in the Pacific Ocean. Spradlin's story is paced extremely well. The characters will hook readers, the plot will grip them, and the factual pieces will create a desire to learn more about the true events behind this fictionalized tale. The shark behavior is, at times, a bit too extreme to be plausible. Still, the story is enjoyable and reveals a tender theme about the power of the human spirit. Patrick finds strength and courage from unusual sources and manages the impossible in order to save his brother and himself. VERDICT A marvelous fit in a social studies class, this novel would work well as a companion text to a World War II unit and will engage and connect students to the past.—Chad Lane, Easton Elementary, Wye Mills, MD

Great WWII Survival Adventure
By Zachary Koenig
In recent years, the story of Louis Zamperini (immortalized in both print and visual media) and his harrowing tale of survival captivated the nation. While reading Michael P. Spradlin’s “Into The Killing Seas”, I couldn’t help but wonder if that “Unbroken” story didn’t have a bit of an influence on the tale, as it also is an incredible story (this time told in historical-fiction style) of the U.S.S. Indianapolis sinking towards the end of WWII.

For a basic plot summary, this novel tells the story of two young brothers, Patrick & Teddy, who are separated from their parents due to the war (living in an orphanage in the Pacific) and wanting desperately to get back to them. When the boys make the acquaintance of Benny, a crew member on the Indianapolis, they hatch a plan to hide themselves on the ship as stowaways. Of course, the ship is attack by the Japanese and sunk, leaving hundreds of men—including Benny, Patrick, & Teddy—in the shark-infested waters.

First and foremost, “Into The Killing Seas” is a great adventure/survival tale. Young readers will be mesmerized by the exploits of the young boys, especially when the sharks show up and must be reckoned with. Very exciting reading.

What author Spradlin also does very well, however, is create characters that are interesting and unique. Sometimes, books aimed at YA audiences contain more “caricatures” than “characters”, but this is profoundly not the case here. The three boys think/act like real young boys might, and the interplay between them is always fresh & interesting.

Finally, even though I won’t reveal much here due to potential spoilers, the ending of this book will throw you for such a big loop that even adult readers won’t see it coming. The fact that Spradlin can pull off such a remarkable ending in a YA novel (by their very nature being relatively simple compared to “adult” novels) speaks volumes towards his writing craftsmanship.

I very much enjoyed reading “Into The Killing Seas” and would highly recommend it to any and all readers. The text type is rather large and the books has the look/feel of something you would find in a middle school media center, but (even if you are an adult) don’t let that dissuade you from giving it a chance. In the tradition of “Unbroken”, it has a great survival story to tell.

Action! Adventure! Things Blow up! and a Shark Attack.
By DeuceMom
OH MY GOODNESS! This is the 19th of Michael Spradlin's books and the best yet. He uses historical fiction in the retelling of the deadliest shark attack in history, the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Patrick and his younger brother Teddy have become separated from their parents in the ending days of World War II. With the help of their friend Benny, they sneak on the Indy, to go in search of their parents. That's when IT happens and they are forced for survive for days in the intense heat, without food or water when sharks begin to circle the area.

As a middle school teacher, this became a favorite of my students especially my reluctant readers because of the fast pace, and intense but carefully worded action. This would be appropriate for any student 5th grade or older.

SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ THE LAST PAGES FIRST! You won't believe the surprise at the end.

Three Soldiers, by John Dos Passos

A searing novel exposing the fate of the common soldier during World War I. Driven by the idealism that infected many young Americans at the time (including Ernest Hemingway), author John Dos Passos joined the Ambulance Corps. His rapid and profound disillusionment forms the core of this fierce denouncement of the military and of the far-reaching social implications of its exploitation of young men.

Review
“I regard Dos Passos as the greatest writer of our time.” —Jean-Paul Sartre

From the Trade Paperback edition.

From the Publisher
A deft chronicler of the American experience, John Dos Passos has taken his place alongside his contemporaries, Ernest Hemmingway and William Faulkner. In Three Soldiers, he introduces readers to a Harvard aesthete who joins the army out of idealism, and his two buddies. One by one, their illusions crumble under the tyranny, red tape, and boredom of the military. The soldiers' reactions range from bitterness to rage, and--for one--murder, in this vivid portrayal of human spirit caught in the grip of war.

Better than a textbook
By Michael Battaglia
I probably shouldn't have read this after the great and mighty USA trilogy since anything else he did only pales to that great work but this is a fine, if little known work from a great writer. As people who have read the USA trilogy know, Dos Passos absolutely hated WWI and everything it stood for and here he got to take out his anger on a few targets. While not as focused as 1919 was, he shows his feelings with a deft touch and a depth of feeling that was rarely seen in war novels, his characters aren't all brilliant, the only really three dimensional one is Andrews but they depict a cross section of American life and through their adventures he shows what his firm belief was: that the machine of the army sucked the spirit out of someone and turned them nearly into a automaton. And without focused on the gory battles, he shows the horror of the war in a way that few writers have. Definitely a book that needs to be looked at again and should be ranked with The Naked and the Dead, and Red Badge of Courage (among others).

Minor Work by an American Great
By A. Ross
Dos Passos's attempt to expose the reader to the plight of the common American enlisted man in WWI rarely manages to achieve the impact one suspects he must have been seeking. It's not about the horrors of battle at all--the three soldiers of the title encounter no real fighting, and half the book takes place after the armistice. Rather, the book is about the horrors inflicted on the minds and spirits of men by the military machine and its inhuman procedures. Dos Passos does this by bludgeoning the reader with the endless drudgery of the soldiers' existence as they meet in boot camp and make their way to France. His three soldiers as clearly meant to cut across the strata of American society: Italian-American San Franciscan, Midwestern farm boy, Harvard-educated pianist, and he clearly shows how they all get ground down and reduced to nothing by the army. In doing so, the book becomes more of an anti-war, pro-personal freedom manifesto than it is a story with a plot. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just isn't done very delicately and thus makes for a rather tedious read. In the end, it's clear why this is considered a rather minor work by an American great.

Highly symbolic treatise on individualism
By James D Mcgee
To read this novel as a war novel is a mistake. World War I is mearly the canvas upon which Dos Passos paints his story. If individuals have a responsibility to their government, what responsibility does that same individual have to his/her own conscience? "Three Soldiers" attempts to answer this question. As with most great works of literature, the story can be read on two levels.

At the surface you have the stories of three men with different desires of who and what they want to be. There is a theme of Socialism and anti-war here as well. It's a good story at the surface level. What makes this novel great, however, is that there is an underlying message here, wrought with symbolism. It's the study of the awakening of the individual and the choices he (John Andrews) makes. It's a study of moral courage in the face of insurmountable odds.

John Andrews (the central character) initially joins the army out of a sense of duty, then begins to recognize how he has been stripped of all who he was and has begun to conform to the "machine" of society. Disgusted, he takes his first tentative steps back toward who he really is at heart. The moment of epiphany comes when, after having been wounded and waking up in a make-shift hospital surrounded by busts of great men of the past, he decides that he must make his stand to change the world in what ever way he can just like the men represented in the busts above him did. His choices eventually drive him to desert the army while in Paris. The real choice comes near the end of the novel when he is presented the opportunity to return to the army with no consequence to his prior desertion. (I won't ruin the ending for you!)

There is a strong element of socialist propoganda in the novel. I am no more a socialist than I am a horse, but the reader should remember that this novel was written before the failings of socialism were widely known. It was a much more idealisic time and the evils and harshness of socialism had yet to be realized. The socialist element of the novel need not deter the reader from the true message: the courage and triumph of individual freedom.

The Queen of the Ring: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Making of an American Legend, by Jeff Leen

At only five foot two, Mildred Burke was an unlikely candidate for the ring. A waitress barely scraping by on Depression-era tips, she wanted more, and she saw her chance when she witnessed her first wrestling match. Even against all odds, she knew that she could become a female wrestler. What followed was a gritty, glittering testament to the golden age of wrestling, when beauty and brawn captivated the world.

From Publishers Weekly
In this intriguing biography, Leen (Kings of Cocaine) chronicles the life of the queen of the mat, Mildred Burke, women's wrestling champion and pioneer of the sport. Burke (1915–1989), along with her husband and manager, Billy Wolfe, are credited with having invented professional women's wrestling and bringing it to prominence: Her muscles and his mind had made the industry of women's professional wrestling in America. Their rise, fall and resurrection is a story as bizarre and titillating as wrestling's own carnival roots. The king and queen of lady rassling broke barriers despite a ban on women's wrestling in many states. Leen, managing editor for the Washington Post's investigations unit, deftly guides the reader through well-documented and researched accounts, which are culled from Burke's unpublished autobiography, interviews and numerous newspaper records. Leen writes: Her speed and skill made her wrestling a thing of beauty in the ring, full of careful shifts of balance and swift and surprising combinations that turned the straining of muscle and limb into a ballet of grace and power. Flavored with authentic speech and dedicated to accuracy, this biography is the tale of an underdog who triumphed. B&w photos. (Aug.)

QUEEN OF THE SQUARED CIRCLE!!!
By David M. Goode
This is the unvarnished story of a true pioneer in the world of professional wrestling. It's also a Horatio Alger tale of how a single mom and former waitress rose from obscurity to become a world champion. From her early days on the carnival circuit where she wrestled(and defeated)men to the days when she headlined at the biggest arenas in the country Mildred Burke was an American original.Burke was an athletic marvel in an age when women were expected to be nothing but subserviant little home-makers.And she had the physique of a female bodybuilder at a time when no one could even concieve what a female bodybuilder was.All the legendary tales are here. But you are told the true stories behind those legends. And some of those stories aren't very pretty.Real life often isn't.This book is as much about tragedies as it is about triumphs. There are heroes here and villians too.Just like there were in wrestling's golden age. This is a book that you won't be able to put down once you start it.I strongly recommend it to any true fan of pro wrestling.

How A Woman Wrestler Overcame Male Chauvinism and Helped Shape 21st century America
By fred vallongo
In "Queen of the Ring," Jeff Leen uses the story of Mildred Burke as a canvas to craft a compelling, and wildly entertaining portrait of professional wrestling, and the struggle of women wrestlers to get credit for their athleticism and ability to put butts in arena seats. As a teenage, single mother Burke saw wrestling as a way to a better life.

At her mother's diner she met the man, Billie Wolfe, who would be her Svengali, and ultimately her nemesis. Leading her to recognition as the Women's Champion (including an incredible draw against her greatest rival in what may have been the last "real" pro wrestling match in the U.S.!). After a tortured marriage marked with domestic violence on Billy's part and infidelity by both. Wolfe would drive his ex-wife to the margins of professional wrestling.

Burke found "life after Wolfe," by wrestling in Japan, and ultimately, in producing films of mixed wrestling, where women successfully defeated male opponents. These films touched on some of the deepest undercurrents of sex, violence, and fetishism that have always been part of wrestling's secret heart.

"Queen" is , ultimately, a vivid portrait of a changing society, a changing sport (and yes, even "worked" pro wrestling is a sport), and a changing paradigm of relations between the sexes, both sexually, and in power dynamics.
I think it would make a heck of a movie, and a film version could be developed from a variety of perspectives. the story of Mildred (Bliss)Burke that wrestling fans, and non-fans alike can both enjoy and learn from

Totally Engrossing...
By KR
I am a big fan of "old school" women's wrestling and I just loved this book. I brought it with me during a flight to London and this book made the flight a total pleasure. I loosely knew the Mildred Burke story from the "Lipstick and Dynamite" film and from several mentions in the Wrestling Observer newsletter but this book taught me a lot about her amazing career.
Mildred was a huge star back in the day but she is pretty obscure among today's fans so this book will hopefully help to get her accomplishments known. Beyond the fact that the wrestling stories are interesting, there is plenty to admire in general just based on how Mildred was able to break so many barriers especially in an era where being a wrestler was far from a typical occupation for a woman. Burke reminds me of Broadway legend Ethel Merman. However, in terms of fame Merman is legendary in Broadway circles while Burke's story has been largely forgotten which is unfortunate.
If you are familiar with Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young from their WWE appearances, it's interesting to note that it was Mildred who inspired these two legends to break into the business!
The one error I found in the book is that it says Moolah won the women's belt from Wendi Richter at the first Wrestlemania when it was Richter who beat Moolah protege Leilani Kai at this show. Interestingly, Moolah won the belt back from Richter in a double cross in late 1985. Double crosses are mentioned fairly often in this book but the Moolah/Richter double cross is not brought up.
You won't be sorry...purchase this book now!
