About the Author
Howard S. Friedman is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside, where he studies personality and health. Devoted to teaching, Professor Friedman has received UCR’s Distinguished Teaching Award; the Outstanding Teacher award from the Western Psychological Association (WPA); and most recently, the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award, for “inspiring students to make a difference in the community.” He was honored with the 2007—2008 James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award from the Association for Psychological Science (APS), which recognizes a lifetime of outstanding contributions to the area of applied psychological research. Dr. Friedman is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, and he is Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Mental Health. An honors graduate of Yale University, he received his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Miriam W. Schustack is Professor and Chair of Psychology at California State University in San Marcos (near San Diego), where she currently specializes in individual differences and the use of computers in learning. She has served as a Fellow of the American Council on Education, as Academic Senate Chair, and as Acting Dean. Dr. Schustack was involved in the development and leadership of CSUSM’s Honors Program, and also in the establishment and promotion of Service Learning. An honors and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Princeton University, Dr. Schustack received her master’s from Yale and her Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. She previously taught at Harvard University.

A Must in any Classical Violin Collection

The recording is crisp and superb. Ms Brown gives a very pleasing interpretation of this piece of Vivaldi's work. Her playing is clean, bright and energetic. The energy and moods are easily felt by the listener. I recommend this CD to both anyone who is just starting to enjoy classical music as well as the seasoned listener who enjoys the baroque era and is building a collection of Violin masters. When this CD was first released several years ago I searched high and low and couldn't find it. All sold out everywhere. I was so happy to learn Hanssler did another issue and now I finally have my own copy.

Neat Little Package

This book, which is a combination of music/text/pictures, is an excellent way to experience Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." Many people are familiar with the music, but how many know that sonnets were printed along with it, to help give imagery to the concertos as they're heard? This book takes that idea one step further, adding prints of paintings from artists who were active during Vivaldi's lifetime. All of these prints depict scenes from the various seasons, and all can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The aforementioned sonnets appear alongside the prints, and are listed in both English and the original Italian verse.

A few notes: the music comes in the form of a CD, and it is encased in plastic on the inside back cover of the book. One should be careful when removing the plastic, because if you remove too much of it, you won't have a place to store the CD. I cut a slit a few inches down so that I can remove the CD but also return it there when finished. There is no "jewel case" for the CD. On a positive note, an extra concerto was included on the CD, which is not part of "The Four Seasons." Vivaldi's "Concerto for Mandolin" etc. (RV 425) can be found at the end of the CD, an unexpected bonus!

Four stars. A nice little combination to be experiecned together - listen to the music, read the sonnets, and view the paitings. This makes an excellent inexpensive gift for a music lover (or even for yourself)!

"Easy to Follow, Even by a Newbie Score Reader"

This score is one of the easiest to follow whether in a concert hall or listening to a CD at home. One can also play directly from the score due its clear printing and spacey musical notes. This musical composition contains only 4-6 instrumental "roles" consisting of strings and bass continu; which makes it an excellent score to follow even by a newbie musician who just starts reading a full musical score;(in comparison to Berlioz's "symphonie fantastique" 5th movement, over 27 different musical instrumental roles playing simultaneously). The listener can easily find his way: bars are numbered and above the musical tones there are short descriptive sceneries comments which serve as "Mile Stones". Actually just by listening to the music one can easily navigate himself since Vivaldi's music is very descriptive and effective in creating vivid mental pictures of: storms, rain, thunder, chorus birds' songs, a dizzy drunkard; no listener will mistake one for the other.Score also contains the sonnets text, upon which the "The Four Seasons" violin concerto is based.
A slight drawback, the musical score is somewhat scanty on dynamics especially at critical stages as the climax of "thunder and lightning" in "Spring" 1st movement in bars: 44, 45, 47 (pages 4-5) "forte" instructions are omitted. Despite that fact this miniature score is still highly enjoyable and recommended.

Not really a "translation" as such

I have to say I agree with some of the other reviews here, that this collection of poetry by "Rumi" is in reality modern American poetry by someone drawing only very loosely on Rumi's work. It is rather a stretch to call it a translation! If one were cynical, one might think the large number of books from this "translator" indicates merely a money-making exercise.

Much better collections/translations can be found, like Maryam Mafi's and Azima Melita Kolin's, but I would personally recommend Juliet Mabey's Rumi: A Spiritual Treasury. This is not only a gorgeous book to look at, but more importantly, both its selection and English rendition demonstrate a deftness of touch that make you think you are reading something very close to the original sentiment. A rare achievement.

Some Meditate, Some Read Devotionals, I read Barks's Rumi

Some people meditate. Some people read biblical devotionals. Some people attend services from wise leaders of whatever faith, spirituality, or life's approach they hold. I read Rumi. Raised conservative Christian, later much more liberal Christian, considered both atheism and agnosticism, rejector of touchy-feely "spirituality" that teaches me no more than a good bumper sticker or a good episode of Oprah, ravenous reader about other traditions--Rumi fills my needs without compromising anything I hold dear or forcing anything I find empty. Reading Rumi brings me peace, understanding, clarity, goals both concrete and ideal, causes me to think deeply about the nature of wisdom, the spirit, the relationship of the human to the divine and humans to one another.

Add to this fondness of Rumi the fact that this edition is translated and curated by Coleman Barks, one of the pre-eminent Rumi translators and scholars and one of the only whose background is related to poetry and textural analysis along with languages and historical contextualizing (full disclosure: I know Barks professionally and have admired his work in other areas as well as this one, but I do not know him well enough to make me predisposed to this text over another, at least not that I am consciously aware of). I am neither a language expert nor a Rumi expert, but from other translations I have read, this edition of Barks reflects that scholarly excellent but adds also the ability to retain the poetry and subjective wisdom of Rumi without a slavish adherence to word-for-word translation. I often open this text as I eat breakfast, a pencil in one hand and a cup of coffee or bagel in the other.

Rumi Torrential and On Fire

I have never read anyone who captures the exuberant ecstasy of Rumi's spiritual outpourings better than Coleman Barks. There are no other versions of Rumi's expanded collection of poems that even come close. The Barks' translations fly off the page like rockets and into one's heart page after page and stay in the mind like the most glorious of diamonds. One can pick up this volume and turn to any page for a shot of verbal adrenaline, for Rumi talks about everything under the sun and is completely free of puritanical shame - so very refreshing.

Rumi's great ability as a teacher and storyteller is that he never seems to talk down to the listener. In fact, he writes as if the listener is on the same level and can ignite the identical inner spark that Rumi has through some kind of spontaneous combustion. Perhaps this is one of the essential messages he has to offer. But his words are not for the academic philistines who are more in love with the letter of the law of translation than its spirit and who lack the understanding and poetic sensibility to make Rumi's words leap off the page in the same way that Barks does.

I gave a copy of this book to a dear friend as a Christmas present at our favorite Italian restaurant and my friend was thrilled. We shared Rumi's poems at the dinner table and everyone within listening distance became enthralled, included the restaurant manager who treated our little dinner party to free coffee and desserts.

If you are new to Rumi I would suggest that you start here and fill out his academic background later. Most libraries also have the Barks' translations.

I'd also like to see a few hundred copies of Rumi circulated at our nation's capitol, since it's hard to imagine anyone there having read something even as basic and moral as "A Thousand and One Nights," either as a child or by their parents, to expand their perspective on the world as an adult - and unfortunately this contracted and limited view of life really really shows and the rest of us have to suffer for it... A Glimpse into the Women of The Wild West

As I lover of Pioneer history, especially in terms of the women of the times, I found The Doctor Wore Petticoats a nice introductory to not only early medicine on the frontier, but to the bravery and fortitude a certain group of tenacious women showed in order to make their way in a man's world. Chris Enss details the lives of 12 different women who won against the odds and became qualified and sought after physicians in the Wild West. Accompanying these short vignettes are some wonderful black and white photos of each woman written about, and some interesting quotes taken from their own diaries and journals. At 125 pages this is just a short glimpse into the world of female doctors in the mid to late 1800s, and my only wish was that the book was a bit longer and offered more stories about each woman presented. Other than that I found this book very enjoyable and eye opening into a world most of us are unknown to.

IT CAPTURES YOUR INTEREST AND KEEPS IT...

I picked this book up to read around 8pm in the evening. I didn't put it down

until I was finished reading it at 2:15am. Although I am able to speed read

this book was so interesting and entertaining that I couldn't miss a single

word. This book is an absolute must for anyone interested in the Old West.

It combined humor, struggle and determination to give a very insightful and

educating book. The book gave a very vivid picture of female doctors in the

Old West. As a bonus it has a wonderful collection of "Frontier Medicine"

listed in the back of the book. Remedies such as carrying an onion in your

pocket to prevent smallpox and owl broth to cure whooping cough are just

a few. If you pick up this book...clear your schedule because you won't be

able to put it down until you have read every single page.

Another GREAT book by Chris Enss!

After reading Hearts West and enjoying it so much, I looked into other books by this author and discovered this jewel. It was an incredibly informative and interesting read. Chris Enss is a gifted writer. She gives the reader insight to a world that was so vastly different from that of today. After reading each woman's story in the book, I longed for more. That is my only disappointment; that I can't know more about each of these women Ms. Enss writes about. I highly recommend it to anyone who is even remotely interested in what life was like for women in the Old West.

More for the Pixar fans

[[VIDEOID:34646791]]If you're still wondering about the real story of Pixar's Up, this book provides very good clues (or spoilers). I'll just say it's about Carl, the old man, going on a journey in search for meaning to his life. The directive from the top was to make Up "the studio's most emotive film to date".

Tim Hauser has provided a good writeup into design style and production process of the movie. There's talk on the story arc, themes, the characters and a bit on the artistic side of production, like visiting a jungle for the research. The Pixar story team provided lots of quotes giving great insight into the story process. On the technical side to animating, nothing much is mentioned.

The challenge for this movie is aimed at simplicity. The character designs are based on simple shapes like squares (Carl), ovals (Russell, balloons), bullets (dogs), etc. I've the impression there are less sets and characters compared to other Pixar movies. There seem to be only the city, the sky (flying objects) and the jungle (big). You can see the focus is going to be on the characters.

The art included are character designs, storyboards, color scripts and few environmental paintings. Descriptions for the illustrations come in the form of quotes. There are lots of character sketches for the main characters, Carl, Russell and the house. Readers looking for the plot will find that in Lou Romano's colour scripts. It seems that there's a new (to me) character designer, Daniel López Muñoz, doing plenty of character sketches.

What you're not going to see are film stills, background paintings and pastels. No idea why but the number of background paintings always pales in comparison to non-Pixar art books. And there's only one pastel painting from Dominque Louis. I miss the pastel paintings included in earlier movie art books.

This book is really more for Pixar fans.

"Hey this doesn't look like one of Pixar's better art book is it?", a colleague remarks to me. Another goes "Not the kind of style I like". Well, I guess it's not for everyone but here are the pictures you can see for yourself. =)

A Fantastic and Different Book for a Fantastic and Different Movie!

Up is a different sort of movie than is commonly made by anyone much less Pixar. The themes addressed in the film are gut wrenching as well as inspiring, and to really gain insight into the methods used to bring them to the screen required a different approach than the average "Art of" book.

Though I have been a fan of Pixar since they came on the scene, I have never been compelled to buy any of their previous "Art of" books. With Up, I was so profoundly moved by this masterwork of a film that I had to find out everything I could about the process of making it! This book does that and more. Filled with carefully chosen preproduction art that shows the evolution of all the major characters and settings, this work also presents the evolution of the perspectives of the creators as they changed throughout the process.

The layout of the book takes inspiration from a prominent volume in the film, with similar colors, a "paste up" style and a very nice emboss hidden under the dust jacket. The paper quality is superb, as is the binding. This is a book that is meant to be looked at often and for a long time.

Even though I would love to have seen ALL the art from Up included, I came away feeling very satisfied in that I had seen more than expected, and all of the "most important" pieces. If you are like me and simply had to have more of Up, this book satisfies that urge and more. For everyone else, The Art of Up is a loving look at the masters of storytelling at work!

art of? making of? quotations?

art of? making of? quotations?; dunno, but this book is a bit boring,

The drawings are great, the artwork is as always superb, ... but why all those quotations, 65 of them taking up al that space, with an ugly 'like written' type for the name of the person, a type screwing up the pages.
There's sometimes one every page, and some are oppressing signed one_liners becoming more 'important' than the drawings.

It's a thing that didn't bother me with the Ratatouille book, these 'notes' and in Up it's maybe just a layout problem, (We love people explaining the creative process behind the movie).
In the Ratatouille book the type was smaller, they were lesser, more concentrated, more instructive with the artwork, closer to the drawings, quotations accompanying the drawings.
In UP I sometimes had the feeling of drawings almost being secondary.

There are 14 of such notes in Monsters, none in The Shorts art book, one of the best art books out there.

So 5 stars for the amazing art_work, minus two for the editing.
