When in Rome: Inspector Roderick Alleyn #26 (Inspectr Roderick Alleyn), by Ngaio Marsh

In 1968 Ngaio Marsh took her own Roman holiday (in part to research Italian police procedures) and the change seems to have done her good: Both her British and U.S. agents believed When in Rome to be the finest novel in her "Inspector Alleyn" series. As is so often (and so satisfyingly) the case, the tale concerns a murder within a closed group—in this case, a group of tourists visiting what Marsh calls the "Basilica di San Tommaso," who find themselves fumbling into a complex web of blackmail and drug-smuggling. Adding some irresistible color are depictions of both La Dolce Vita (of which Marsh took a jaundiced view) and the student radicals of the day, whom she seems to have found somewhat more persuasive. All in all, a brilliant example of classic Golden Age plotting melded with a decidedly Space Age cast.

One of Ngaio Marsh's best!
By desertdunes
I am a big fan of classic murder mysteries from the first half of the 20th century, probably because the quality of writing is so high. Ngaio Marsh is one of my favorites, because she writes prose with a painter's eye, and her scenes, situations and characters are vividly described. She does not fail in this book, the scenes set underground in the church crypt and excavation are so easy to imagine, all that history and suspense pressing down on each character in the dark. Lovely ending, too, quite suprising for this author.

Great - but not your typical Alleyn mystery
By Peachflier
I liked this book, just not as an Inspector Alleyn book. I love all the familiar characters -- Brer Fox, Troy, etc. And they aren't in this. But Marsh did write a very good book. If it had been a different character, I may have given it 5 stars, but I just missed the regulars and the usual English setting. It is much more adventure/derring-do than the slower paced Marsh books. And as said before, very well written.

I confess I am a R Alleyn fan and have been for years. This book is very entertaining in its familiarity with Rome and the different ways the "cast" is presented.

Wide Open, by Larry Bjornson

Based on actual events, this is the epic story of Abilene, Kansas, at a time when the cowboy was king, might made right, and the future seemed as unsettled as the endless prairie.

Abilene, 1871. Will Merritt is fiercely protective of the cattle trade that made his father’s fortune. Idolizing the cowboys who flood the streets each summer, Will and his friends are drawn to Abilene’s exotic Texastown district—a powderkeg of saloons and brothels so notorious that the mayor has hired the West’s most famous gunman, Wild Bill Hickok, to police its streets. Yet even with Hickok as marshal, Abilene boils with deep divisions.
The townsfolk resent the migrant settlers whose new farms are slicing up the rangeland. And no one is more intolerant than Will’s best friend, Jasper, who delights in tormenting any farmer he encounters. But Will finds himself torn when he meets the beautiful and beguiling Anna, whose dignity and determination test his deepest beliefs.

Then Will’s father reveals a stunning secret that challenges Abilene’s future, one that makes the Merritts outcasts. And when Wild Bill’s tenure as marshal comes to a violent head, Will realizes that everything—his family, his friends, and the only home he’s ever known—could be gone in an instant, leaving only an empty wilderness once again.

Review
"Countless novels have been written about Wild Bill Hickok and the rough cattle town of Abilene, Kansas, of the 1870s. Larry Bjornson, however, makes the story fresh, unique, and moving."--Johnny D. Boggs, Spur Award-winning author of East of the Border and Northfield

"From the raucous saloons kept in check by Marshal Wild Bill Hickok, to the farmers living in sod houses as they struggle to scrape by, Larry Bjornson brings the wild west alive with such detail and clarity, if I didn't know better, I would think he lived through it." --Louis Sachar, author of Newbery Medal winner Holes

A Fantastic Read
By Natalie
"Wide Open" delivers every element I want in a book: good writing, realistic characters, and a great story. And as a bonus, the book also supplies a good dose of page-turning suspense, historical information about a pivotal time in the settlement of the American West, and most importantly, it left me feeling richer as a person, richer to have known Will Merritt, his family, and all the other folks who live on the pages of Bjornson's novel. "Wide Open" takes an honored place in my bookshelf as one of those treasures I will return to over and over, for the sheer pleasure of experiencing that richness again.

Author Larry Bjornson draws the reader in right away, with wonderful, well-crafted prose, and keeps us riveted until the last page, painting one cinematic scene after another, in luscious detail, transporting us to the time and place of the American frontier just after the Civil War, during one summer which historically couldn't possibly pack more punch, action-wise: this was the summer feared gunman Wild Bill Hickok was called into Abilene, Kansas to keep order, just as the interests and tempers of two clashing populations - the carousing, cattle-driving cowboys and the dirt-poor, hard-working settlers - were flaring into an unstoppable showdown.

Bjornson puts the reader right in the middle of the action with an extremely likeable fifteen-year-old narrator named Will Merritt, whose father becomes the agent of the turmoil that erupts in Abilene that summer. Will's life is turned upside-down as he finds himself torn between loyalties, facing not only danger and loss but also his own conscience.

Will gives us a wide-eyed, youthful window on all the action, and there is more action packed into this 380-page novel than I would have believed possible. There are cattle drives, barroom brawls, accidents, emergencies, stunts, and adventures, too many to count. Each one is drawn in sprawling cinematic detail, full of sights and sounds and smells of Old West life that put the reader right in the middle of things. There's the time the longhorn steer falls through the....well, I don't want to give anything away, let's just say there is one surprise after another, all woven into a meaningful whole by the thoughtful narration of young Will.

Possibly the most compelling reason for me to recommend the book is the quality of Bjornson's writing. His prose is so well-crafted that it bears reading slowly, so that one can savor the language. Bjornson's ability to evoke the sensory experience of being present at a scene is remarkable. His ability to make the reader feel like his characters are absolutely real people, through wonderfully observant external and internal dialogue, brings not only a caring for these characters, but also a recognition of the ways we share the same foibles, and we feel what they feel. The poignancy of situations encountered by Will are handled with such sensitivity by Bjornson that I was moved to tears many times.

Bjornson treats us to unexpected little moments of self-honesty and insight from his narrator that are rare in a novel. Will screws up sometimes, and he knows it, but we are happy to forgive him, because his humanity always shines through. Will's initial attraction to his first love, Anna, is fraught with conflicting emotions that Bjornson delights in sharing with us, and not without a considerable amount of humor. All the characters in "Wide Open" - whether cowboy, settler, or townie, whether young'n or adult - are complex and deeply human. Bjornson says in an interview, "Everyone in the book, even the best of them, at some point behaves badly. And even the worst are capable of honorable actions."

"Wide Open" is traditional in style - unapologetically old-fashioned, and I want to call it "reader-friendly." There is no graphic violence, no cynicism, and not even any bad language that I can recall. In summary, it's a very satisfying read - wonderfully written, fun, emotionally satisfying, with sympathetic characters, a palpable sense of time and place, and cinematic action and lots of it. I can't wait for Bjornson's next offering.

Engrossing historical fiction for readers of all ages.
By Rontonio
I like to be entertained, and this book delivered. It's the story of a boy growing up on the outskirts of one of the most raucous towns in the old west, Ablilene, Kansas in 1871. It's part mystery, authentic western action, a love story, and real history from a time long ago - You'll be floored by the twist half way through when you read what Will's father had been planning.

Danger was all around. Emotions were peaked. The streets of Texastown, rampaging cattle, and Wild Bill Hickok had the ability to change lives in an instant, and they did. Tenderness and the meaning of real friendship are here, too. You will remember what it was like for kids during the long days of summers past, before they were hijacked by baseball and soccer practice. There were so many ways to get into trouble.

Will Merritt, then about 15 years old, narrates in a way that you will forever remember. You may have read some good books, but not one by an author that really knows how to write and so deftly turn a phrase. When I compare notes with fellow readers I can barely hold back when describing the vivid scenes and downright enjoyment and surprise I had when I "lived" in the Wide Open world just outside Abilene.

In my mind's eye the characters were alive, and I eavesdropped on their conversations. This book was a visual experience similar to watching a fascinating subtitled movie, and days later forgotten I had read what the characters where saying. The scenes in town were filled with gunshots, the din of cowboys raising hell and the smell of whiskey and horses. I was parched by the hot prairie winds. I was there.

The well-tuned dialog is up there with my favorite authors, but this is a warning. Wide Open will spoil you. The book you read after this one, regardless of who wrote it, will seem like it was penned by a high school student. This is literary historical fiction at its finest. It's one of the best, most engrossing books I've ever experienced. I didn't want it to end.

Remarkable writing; deeply moving story
By Disorderly Words
In 1871, Abilene, Kansas, is a raucous cow town on the cusp of a historic shift that will define the future of an entire region. Residents are well aware that without the massive cattle drives from Texas, Abilene wouldn't exist, yet they grow increasingly alarmed by the violence and sin thousands of wild Texas cowboys bring with them. Some Abilene citizens are convinced the farmers flooding in to homestead free federal land represent the town's salvation, if the dirt-poor sodbusters can overcome Kansas' relentless summer heat and drought.

Young Will Merritt firmly supports the pro-cowboy faction, publicly shaming the stubble-jumpers at every opportunity. Abilene is the first real home fifteen-year-old Will and his family have known after following his vagabond father's reckless dreams. Gregarious J.T. Merritt finally has found success as a land speculator. He's an important man in town ... until he gambles on a solution that will save the farmers and point Abilene in a new, more respectable, direction. Overnight, Will's life -- and his perspective -- undergo a monumental change. Growing up can be bittersweet.

Winner of multiple awards, Larry Bjornson's WIDE OPEN engrosses from the very first page. The nearly flawless writing is breathtaking, presenting cinematic panoramas, riveting action, and heartfelt emotion without ever compromising the first-person point of view, slowing the pace, or dipping into maudlin.

Bjornson's voice is fresh and evocative; his effortless prose breathes astounding beauty, chuckle-worthy cleverness, and heart-rending pathos in equal measure. This is literature in the Steinbeck tradition.

Although "wild and woolly" certainly describes Bjornson's Abilene and the surrounding Kansas prairie, WIDE OPEN runs far deeper than a young man's adventure. Will's journey is universal and profoundly moving. Regardless readers' personal histories, they'll recognize themselves in Will.

I cannot recommend WIDE OPEN highly enough, as both an excellent story for readers of all ages and an education in elevating fiction, regardless of genre, to art.

The Theater Will Rock: A History of the Rock Musical, from Hair to Hedwig, by Elizabeth Lara Wollman

"A much-needed study of the impact of rock music on the musical theater and its resulting challenges, complexities, failures, and successes. Anyone interested in Broadway will learn a great deal from this book."
---William Everett, author of The Musical: A Research Guide to Musical Theatre

"As Wollman weaves her historical narrative, she compellingly returns to . . . the conflict between the aesthetics and ideologies of rock music and the disciplined and commercial practices of the musical stage."
---Theatre Research International

"This well-written account puts the highs and lows of producing staged rock musicals in New York City into perspective and is well worth reading for the depth of insight it provides."
---Studies in Musical Theatre

The tumultuous decade of the 1960s in America gave birth to many new ideas and forms of expression, among them the rock musical. An unlikely offspring of the performing arts, the rock musical appeared when two highly distinctive and American art forms joined onstage in New York City. The Theater Will Rock explores the history of the rock musical, which has since evolved to become one of the most important cultural influences on American musical theater, and a major cultural export.

Despite the genre’s influence and fame, there are still some critics who claim that the term “rock musical” is an oxymoron. The relationship between rock and the musical theater has been stormy from the start, and even the comparatively recent success of Rent has done little to convince theater producers that rock musicals are anything but highly risky ventures. Elizabeth L. Wollman explores the reasons behind these problematic connections and looks at the socioeconomic forces that underlie aesthetic decisions. She weighs the influence on the rock musical by mass media, sound, and recording technology, and the economic pressures that have affected New York theater in general over the past three decades. Finally, Wollman offers a meditation on the state of the musical, its relation to rock, and, ultimately, its future.

Packed with candid commentary by members of New York's vibrant theater community, The Theater Will Rock traces the rock musical’s evolution over nearly fifty years, in popular productions such as Hair, The Who's Tommy, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horrors, Rent, and Mamma Mia!—and in notable flops such as The Capeman.

Elizabeth L. Wollman is Assistant Professor of Music at Baruch College of the City University of New York.

Great book on Modern Musical Theater!
By Bill Crouch
One of the best and most informative books on Musical Theater out there today. In a relatively new field of study, this book pushes the scholarship methodology to a finer level. Combines strong research with on site interviews with the pre-eminent makers of today's rock musicals. Get this book if you are getting a degree, or if you are a professional in the Music Theater industry in a major city in the U.S.A.

Broadway Never Lost Its Hair
By R F Brown
There does seem to be a common understanding that before the musical Hair there was nothing like Hair and that most of what followed Hair were flop imitations - Dude, Via Galactica, Rainbow. Though Hair became a classic, theatrical producers stopped throwing their money away on rock scores by about 1975. What Elizabeth Wollman's through history brings forward is that Hair's influence in musical theatre can be seen in decades of cultural tug-of-war between keeping rock music's aesthetics authentic and produce musicals that have mass audience appeal. Hair's long beautiful hair grew into Grease, and Les Mis, and Mama Mia but through the use of softer forms of rock music. We don't really recognize how things of changed since Rogers and Hammerstein. Unlike any work I've read on the topic of musical theatre, or even in rock journalism for that matter, Wollman finally provides language for describing the variety of very different kinds of musical theatre that are too often lazily categorized as "rock musicals." For once Hair is rock musical, Jesus Christ Superstar is rock opera and Dreamgirls and Smokey Joe's Cafe are other things too, well categorized here. I have a couple of quibbles. First, I think Wollman doesn't emphasize that much of the failure in those fabulous post-Hair rock flops lies in being rushed to Broadway with big money backers and no existing source material. Most of the truly great shows in musical theatre are drawn from novels, plays or history. At least Hair had the huge benefit of a long and sometimes painful gestation period before finally coming uptown. The big rock flops of the early 1970's were being made-up on the spot. Ironically two of the successful rock musicals from the same period, Your Own Thing and Two Gentleman of Verona were adapted from that rebellious beatnik Shakespeare. Next, Wollman makes frequent reference to off-off Broadway shows like House of Leather and The Legend of Johnny Pot which barely ever opened, meanwhile her research overlooks shows like Promenade (259 performances) and Salvation (239 performances). Finally, between her socio-historical chapters the author includes some short academic meditations on audience attitudes, marketing experiments, and musical aesthetics. These interlude essay are well written they do seem like step children, sections from a different book. If you are seeking musical aesthetics and composition for musical theater, you won't find much here on the specific shows or songs. However this is excellent work on cultural commodification and the economics of Broadway over the last forty years.

Not bad, but needs an update.
By kjtenorman
Not bad, but it definitely needs an update. This book was released in 2009, but the last musical it covers is Mamma Mia! in 2001 (huh?). A ton of rock musicals have premiered on and off-broadway since then (Spring Awakening, Next to Normal, Once, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, etc.). I appreciate that the author took the time to find some great quotes from individuals who were involved with each musical discussed. However, the author doesn't thoroughly analyze each show, and some of her observations are a little odd and biased. That said, this is a pretty good general rock musical resource (albeit out-of-date).

In this magisterial novel's first volume, which runs up to the 1950s, we meet prehistoric monkeys who spread a peculiar virus, a Native American shaman whose sexual explorations mutate into occult visions, and early English settlers who live as loving same-sex couples only to fall victim to the forces of bigotry. George Washington and Alexander Hamilton revel in unexpected intimacies, and John Wilkes Booth's motives for assassinating Lincoln are thoroughly revised. In the twentieth century, a religious sect tries to exterminate homosexuals, and the AIDS virus begins to spread. Against all this, Kramer sets the tender story of a middle-class family trying to get along in the darkest of times.

Review
Breathtakingly well-written. And how could one not keep reading, no matter how endless, a book with a line such as 'You don't just drop a penis like Tibby's into the narrative and let it go'? (Kirkus (starred review))

Kramer is a singular force, furious because he cares. He honestly confronts hard, unspoken truths and goes somewhere with them, which is a rare thing. (T Fleischmann Publishers Weekly (boxed, signature review))

Larry Kramer is one of America's most valuable troublemakers. I hope he never lowers his voice. (Susan Sontag)

Larry Kramer has been a prophet of psychic health and catastrophe among us a prophet unmatched for the accuracy of his omens and the reliability of his anathemas and remedies. (The American Academy of Arts and Letters)

Larry Kramer's magnum opus (Elissa Schappel Vanity Fair)

A work of sustained passion . . . Formidable. --(Dwight Garner The New York Times)

April/May 2015 “…you don’t use the word like with that kind of book
By Adam D. Dunn
I don't understand how so many people can read this book and write a one-line review. The book is so long, and says so much, surely you felt something more??

At one point I wrote: I'm 64% done with The American People: This is the time of the wade. Wade through, wade on, stop for a breath, go faster to get to the end sooner, go slower or stop, the wading through.

Andrew Holleran, in an interview with Kramer in The Advocate, April/May 2015 “…you don’t use the word like with that kind of book. Stunned is the word. It was a roller coaster of a book. There were times when I was laughing out loud, there were times when I was putting the book down, there were times when I was, “yes yes yes,” there were times when I said, “Oh this is crazy.””

I really agree with all this. There's a five-star review of this book on Amazon where the reviewer says he slogged through it, and that's the kind of book this is. It's not going to be easy. Fa**ots also wasn't easy and I remember slogging through that too, reminding myself that if you put one foot in front of the next eventually you will finish and I felt that often reading this. Holleran also mentions the short chapter lengths which help you get through the book and I found that too. It would say "2 minutes left in this chapter" on my Kindle and I'd think "I can do two minutes." You put enough of those together and you'll get back to an interesting part, or a coherent part, again.

It's difficult to rate this book being that it's really only half a book, I need to see what's going to happen before I can fully decide. Many people have complained the book needs an editor, but it has had one. The book is 4000 pages long. You are getting 800 in part one and say another 800 in part two, that's 2400 pages cut. Kramer says after part two is published he plans to self-publish the remaining 2400 pages. I can't see anyone on earth reading that.

There were times reading this book I lost sleep, times I was mad, times I put the book down, times I learned things and times I didn't. Fa**ots had some humor to make the medicine go down and this book needs a lot more of that. Kramer writes in the same satirical tone for this book but it's not a satire, it's a history and it doesn't always work. The names of people, Masturbatov for example, the letters written and answered to people that don't exist, chapter titles like “IANTHE ADAMS STRODE REPLIES TO DAME LADY HERMIA BLEDD-WRENCH’S INQUIRY”, these things don't help. Plus there's a couple points in the narrative that are so over-the-top crazy I don't even know what to say. The Rabbi who saves boy's foreskins to fertilize his garden then eats his sons 10 year-old foreskin out of a jar of formaldehyde while he burns down the house. What does one say to that? Again, this is not a book you can just say you like or not.

Going through some quotes now, I felt the book often lost focus, and found the following statement at the beginning of the book:

“I, Laurence David Kramer, in my country of death, write this history of the plague, and of The American People before and during this time of plague, and of our people who have died from this plague, and of who and what caused this plague.”

Kramer much later says:

“I cannot seem to let go of every grain of detail, for each at some moment seems so important that I must scoop it up and slither it into my own voluminous vomit-out. The world must know everything!”

Well underline everything and put some butter on it. It's hard to say what is relevant in the book and what isn't as we don't know where the book is going, we've only got the first half. I would say the sections on the gayness of past American presidents is the weakest, this may tie in later to a homophobic culture suppressing the disease, the "underlying condition", but this book itself doesn't tie it in to anything. It seems to be put there simply because Tony Kushner refused to mention Lincoln's gayness in the movie he wrote, Kramer even mentions Kuchner by name in this book.

I would agree, as Kramer says:

“There are a lot of reasons why we continue to die in droves that have nothing to do with actual physical disease.”

There is no evidence though that AIDS started in America, in fact there is evidence it didn't. The concept that the disease had evolved and has been around in some form longer than anyone thinks is interesting. The idea that the disease evolved and that people's actions helped it is I think the point of the book, but it's really not explored fully or well. So many side tangents to wade through it's often hard to see the forest for the trees.

“Everyone has been infecting everyone else since the Garden of Eden. Of course we are all connected! Alas, it is up to us to figure out how and who. And few of us really want to sort all that out.”

Kramer often himself acknowledges the impossibility of the scope of the book and the many side-steps he's taking:

“Who is a**-feeding you all this manure? This is not history!”

“OK, back to the proverbial grindstone in attempting to sort out who’s who and what’s what and who did what and when and why are we here today, if we are here today, if we are anywhere today. I must be of firmer faith that eventually we shall get ourselves somewhere!”

“Where are your notes that would speed the narration of this horrid tragedy along while you keep clip-clopping around without a plan of action? At this rate we shall never get to The Underlying Condition!”

While at the same time talking to and answering himself:

“You continue to raise excellent questions, my dear old friend, Fred.”

Kramer calls the book non-fiction but then makes up sources where they don't otherwise exist. I've often thought there should be a book on bathhouses in America, the Everhard in NYC was open more than 100 years, there has to be a story there! So when Kramer references the book “Norbert and Noreen Curlue, A Handbook to America’s Most Welcoming Bathhouses, 1990” I looked it up, doesn't exist. Some of the other references to Yale I looked up and they do exist, so how can you keep any of it straight?

Also the book has many pseudonyms and it's almost impossible to keep them going in your mind as well. The book says “I Read in the Monument that Senator Vurd had 112 men fired for being homosexual.” So I Google Vurd, don't find him, and assume Vurd is a pseudonym for McCarthy. But then later the book says, “This was in 1949, not far from McCarthy and Vurd and Sam Sport and that gang.” Did I miss Vurd on my first search, is he made up, is he a combination of McCarthy and someone else, who knows.

Add to this confusion Kramer's own agenda and hyperbole:

“Henry Ford would destroy any place on earth as long as there was a Jew still living in it. The world will never know or believe this, that Henry Ford hates Jews even more than Hitler does.”

More than Hitler. It becomes clear that this non-fiction history is not going to be easy, or like any that have come before.

All this being said I liked how gay the book was, a line that I liked:

“I notice that when I think about his pe*is my own pe*is feels warmer, as if it wants to meet a friend.”

There's something here. The idea that AIDS evolved and was around earlier than we suspect. The concept of homophobia through the ages and how that relates to the spread of AIDS when it does eventually come out. The history of the study of disease in the United States, specifically sexually-transmitted diseases. There's also a lot of factors working against it, the view from Kramer's sometimes opaque lens and the fact that we only have half a story. I can't really form a final opinion until I see the rest.

It is not an easy read, not for a summer on the beach
By Greg Rothman
This is an important book. It's hard to say what kind of a book it is and it may require it's own genre. It's called a novel. It could not be called a history. Perhaps semi-historical fantasia is correct.

It is not an easy read, not for a summer on the beach. It requires focus. It is at turns horrific, and at others hilarious. It is profound and heartfelt. And also disgusting and excremental. It is passionate and shows love for many of its characters.

They say history is written by the victors, which the gays (nor the Jews) never were. So Kramer is filling in those huge missing pieces in his way. One often does not know what to believe is true, or partially true, or not true at all. I think every reader will come to their own conclusions about this, right or wrong but surely not indifferent. When asked in an interview "how can you be absolutely certain George Washington was gay", Kramer replied "How can you be absolutely certain he was not gay". So this is where we are left.

I will say that I had a hard time finding my rhythm until about 75 pages in. But once you get beyond the midpoint or so, things begin to come together in a way that pushes you forward. I never thought I would say this about a book 775 pages in length, but it really did wrap up rather quickly toward the end. I am one who will be one of the first to read volume 2.

I do understand the negative reviews. I would not expect everyone to "like" this book. It's long and difficult and requires a reader with an attention span. But regardless of like ability, the importance of the book stands out. I'm not sure how anyone would feel otherwise.

I admire Larry Kramer's passion just like everyone else does
By Amazon Customer
Sigh .... So yeah, I admire Larry Kramer's passion just like everyone else does. But there's a huge elephant in the room: He's not a good writer. And this is not a novel. The only reason this book was published--and reviewed tolerably in major publications like NYT--is because of WHO Larry Kramer is, not because of the quality of his writing. Who Larry Kramer is and what he's done during his life are not good enough reasons to waste $20 and LOTS of time trying to make sense of this mess. What's so frustrating to me is that Kramer seems to have a specific theory as to the origin of AIDS and how/why the major outbreak occurred circa 1980. That's what I wanted to find out. His hints are intriguing. That's all that's intriguing about this book. I expect he'll answer the question in Volume II but we'll have to slog through another 800 pages to try to get it. (I certainly can't think of another book whose reviewers use the word "slog" so universally.) The most frustrating aspect for me was that it reads like a roman a clef without a clef. Some of the characters are real. Some are based on real characters but changed. Some have fake names, others real, etc. Why? Kramer seems to want to "tell on" certain real-life individuals: so-and-so was closeted; so-and-so was a homophobe, etc. So why use a pseudonym for the Ronald Reagan character? We all know who it is. Does giving him a silly name add value somehow? Unfortunately it took me more than a week to get through this crap, so it's too late for me to ask for a refund of my e-book. Wish I could give it away and get the week and $20 back!

Ripley's Game, by Patricia Highsmith

With its sinister humor and genius plotting, Ripley's Game is an enduring portrait of a compulsive, sociopathic American antihero.

Living on his posh French estate with his elegant heiress wife, Tom Ripley, on the cusp of middle age, is no longer the striving comer of The Talented Mr. Ripley. Having accrued considerable wealth through a long career of crime―forgery, extortion, serial murder―Ripley still finds his appetite unquenched and longs to get back in the game. In Ripley's Game, first published in 1974, Patricia Highsmith's classic chameleon relishes the opportunity to simultaneously repay an insult and help a friend commit a crime―and escape the doldrums of his idyllic retirement. This third novel in Highsmith's series is one of her most psychologically nuanced―particularly memorable for its dark, absurd humor―and was hailed by critics for its ability to manipulate the tropes of the genre. With the creation of Ripley, one of literature's most seductive sociopaths, Highsmith anticipated the likes of Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter years before their appearance.

Review
"For eliciting the menace that lurks in familiar surroundings, there's no one like Patricia Highsmith."

From the Inside Flap
Connoisseur of art, harpsichord aficionado, gardener extraordinaire, and genius of improvisational murder, the inimitable Tom Ripley finds his complacency shaken when he is scorned at a posh gala. While an ordinary psychopath might repay the insult with some mild act of retribution, what Ripley has in mind is far more subtle, and infinitely more sinister. A social slight doesn't warrant murder of course-- just a chain of events that may lead to it.

About the Author
Patricia Highsmith (1921–1995) was the author of more than twenty novels, including Strangers on a Train, The Price of Salt, The Blunderer and The Talented Mr. Ripley, as well as numerous short stories.

An excellent novel in many respects
By Maginot
In her book about plotting and writing thrillers, Patricia Highsmith said that European critics and publishers think of her books as novels, not merely as thrillers. After reading "Ripley's Game", one can certainly sympathize with the European point of view. "Ripley's Game" is an excellent thriller and an excellent novel.
I suspect that this book finds Tom Ripley in mid career. He's married and living on a French estate thanks to the generosity of a father-in-law who despises him. A series of chance events provide Ripley with the opportunity to simultaneously repay an insult and to help a friend commit a crime. The ensuing action comprises one of Patricia Highsmith's most interesting stories.
Ripley engineers events so that the man who insulted him ends up committing the crime for his friend. But a sense of guilt and an adventurous spirit compel Ripley to come to the man's assistance. Since crimes never succeed in the exact manner intended, Ripley and company soon find themselves in a desperate situation that requires a lot of maneuvering.
By the end of the story, at least two people with conventional mores wind up behaving in a manner that contradicts their ethics. While Ripley's point of view is a little more subdued than usual, he still displays a few humorous touches. In the scene where he decides that he must garrote a Mafia leader, for example, he becomes excited at the thought of "his first Mafia effort". Later when he must explain the presence of two dead Mafia hitmen to a frightened housewife, he becomes the country gentlemen informing her that these people are vermin whose death is regrettable but who deserved their fate.
Patricia Highsmith usually writes from the point of view of a single protagonist, and since all speech and action is conveyed through that person, we quickly see things from his or her point of view. In this novel, however, the action is disseminated through two points of view, Ripley's and that of his puppet/accomplice. The result is both interesting and unsettling. On the one hand, we really get a sense of what other people think of Tom Ripley, and how much of his criminal life is apparent to them. On the other hand, it's a strange change to observe Ripley from the outside instead of seeing the action from his point of view.
"Ripley's Game" examines the forces that motivate a normally law abiding citizen to commit a crime. In the process it causes us to question how circumstantial our own morality and legal obedience may actually be.

Language and Communication: Comparative Perspectives (Comparative Cognition and Neuroscience)From Psychology Press

The result of a conference on language and related cognitive processes in animals, this book brings together scientists working on language and communication, reviews research done on language in apes and dolphins, and places this work in a larger perspective of animal communication and cognition. The conference convened an international group of distinguished scientists interested in exploring the neurological, cognitive, social, and behavioral aspects of communication in animals. A broad spectrum of perspectives was represented, including naturalistic investigations of animals in their natural habitat as well as strictly controlled laboratory investigations. Similarly, a broad range of species was described including rats, parrots, monkeys, apes, dolphins, and humans.

New methodologies and perspectives are continuously emerging that allow consideration of issues that previously could not be resolved. Emerging technology such as video equipment and advanced database systems allow one to exhaustively record in an accessible format the evidence on which scientific conclusions must be based. Investigation of animal language and communication is a small, but vigorously exciting area of scientific investigation as the chapters in this volume clearly attest.
