History in books, if you'll stop babbling about Hollywood for a moment

Barry Commoner is now being forgotten by mainstream American culture. It forgets a lot.

This book, along with such things as "Silent Spring", is one of the primary texts marking and shaping the American (and world) awareness of the dangers posed to nature and the worldwide natural environment by home sapiens and our species increasingly multitudinous and potent activities. Back in the day, there was a tendency in the American popular media to define this threat in terms of increasingly powerful and inscrutable technology or increasing human population. Fools and polemicists tended to see this "either ... or", and Commoner was usually pointed out as holding that technology was the principal threat; indeed, he did in fact downplay increasing population as an independent factor in environmental degradation, holding that unsustainable population increase was largely a result of poverty, and by extension inappropriate or inequitably distributed technological access. Paul Ehrlich was usually the symbol of the population side. But this kind of artificial opposition wasn't inherent in what anyone who really thought was really thinking, however easy it was for genuine thinkers such as Commoner to get drawn into media-driven polemic.

From Chapter Ten, "Social Issues":

"Ecological survival does not mean the abandonment of technology. Rather, it requires that technology be derived from a scientific analysis that is appropriate to the natural world on which the technology intrudes."

The books systematically goes through the various issues as we saw them, in the day: the meaning of ecosystems, air, water, earth, social and economic issues, certain specially powerful dangers, such as nuclear technology. With the educated mutation of some mutanda, the book is still intellectually, not just historically valuable.

But history looms large in this one. For years, Barry Commoner was an competent and dignified proponent of sanity and caution in public matters. Unfortunately, he was one of few. I remember vividly his appearance on William F. Buckley's "Firing Line". After quite a few sallies by Buckley along the lines of "In your chapter on, you say ...", with responses along the lines of "No, actually, what I said there was ...", Commoner suddenly asked, when it was least expected, "Did you actually read this book?" Buckley hadn't expected the question, at least not then, so he was completely flummoxed. This was the kind of thing the establishment culture threw at people like Commoner. At least Buckley was more or less polite about it. His epigones have not been as polite, and it is increasingly clear that the populace listens to the polemicist, not scientists like Commoner.

Off grid legally

This book explains many of the requirements and steps they took to live in a renewable energy home legally. It will give you some pointers on which agency to contact for your area to find out what codes are required. He also discusses the different components of solar energy and how to calculate your needs to size a system. I found it a very good source of information for wanting to live a more self sustaining lifestyle

Great start for those wanting to go off grid, homesteading or providing their own source of renewable energy. Know all the critical questions that need answered while searching for your property. The book deals with all the consideration for water, sewage, housing and sources of energy. Bill is an experienced off gridder and shares his unique perspectives on the start up.

He's the one.

I read this as a young man in the early 50s and again now as I approach 80 . . . and tears streamed down my cheeks--I don't know exactly why--at the scene in which Gerry is introduced to the group. They all wonder about him and someone asks "Are you sure?" And Baby's answer (through Janie) is "Sure. He's the one." I wish the notion of his being "the one" were expanded a bit . . . and I wish it was made clearer exactly what he added to the group. He himself wonders what he can do for the group that they can't do for themselves. OK, his job is to hold the group together . . . but why is he "the one"--apparently the only one--who could do that.

Classic Sturgeon seems as fresh and new today as it did more than 60 years ago.

Yesterday, I read "More Than Human". Published in 1953, and always a staple of Sturgeon fans, it is about six misfit humans who discover that they are more together and are drawn into what they call a "human gestalt". This novel packed a huge wallop on the American literary scene, and what came immediately after. I'd give it five stars - more if I could. I learned from this book - I am sorry to find it so late in my life, because there's a lot to learn here - all written in Sturgeon's fine, spare prose - and not much time left.

A sci-fi classic, this story gathers society "misfits" and creates new methods of relating to/with others. It can be read from the surface story and if interested, can be used as a jumping board for possible solutions to world chaos. Highly recommended reading for robotic engineers, social planners, and teachers of any age.

Very in-depth read on the electronics side of silicon

Readers beware, this is a great book but it requires some strong schooling on your part. If you come from an electrical engineering, material science or electrochemical background, this is the book for you. If not, you will certainly get lost during certain portions of the book.

Having said that, this book did provide some very useful insights into the history of silicon, why it has become prevalent and its various uses. Just be ready to skim some sections if you are not in the above mentioned fields.
