Excellent primer in computational physics; needs more explanatory Java material

I used this book for a graduate computational Physics course. It provides an excellent overview of the modern practice of the subject (including even new methods like genetic programming!), and has the great strength of coming with sample codes. These codes allow the student to work with examples, to get a feel for how to structure programs, and provide useful templates for working through the exercises. The one downside of the text is that while it beings with an introduction to Java, it only described the language; it does not teach it. It would be much improved with an introduction to the basics needed to understand, modify, and use the Java programs on Pang's website. If you are using this book and you do not yet know Java, I recommend either finding someone to teach you what you need to know, or seeking out another text to teach you the basics of Java. As a computational physics resource, highly recommended.

Thorough intro but...

Altohough I am not a fan of Fortran by any means the book (now that many of the original errors are corrected) is extremely thorough and readable, but be aware this is not necessarily for the neophyte. One MUST have a good knowledge of numerical anlaysis since derivations of relevant formulas is scant. The book's strength lies in the breadth of topics covered, here you will not find the often included "sport physics" chapter as an introduction, rather you are introduced to the most common numerical methods used by scientists when an analytical soultion is not feasible. The book does deal with many problems found int physics from scattering to quantum mechancis and molecular modelling, Monte Carlo methods and some case studies of applied physics e.g the chapter including ground water dynamics. In the last chapters the author wisely introduces symbolic computing using Mathematica as an example and this is applauded as many of us are not willing to reinvent the wheel since there many excellent programs like Maple, MathCad, FemLab etc and an introduction to the like is good. He also discusses parallel computing and this is also welcome as it has gained more prevalent use in computational sciences.

A complaint, since the book claims by its title no less, that it is an introduction to computational physics, there should have been explict chapters on or at least a chapter on Sports Physics, Astronomy, Cellular Automata. That said the case studies on molecular dynamics, nuclear waste storage and chaos are great.

All in all, a solid text but one should be aware of the fact that the author (and to some extent, rightly so) assumes that the reader has a solid grasp of numerical analsyis, calculus and physics. Having said that if you need a really simple and thorough, ground up introduction and haven't taken the aforementioned courses then try Giordano's Computational Physics, be warned if you are like me and can barely tolerate Fortran (I grew up on C/C++) then the True Basic code snippets (for Mac) in Giordano's book will irritate you to no end!!

Good but more advanced than the title suggests

This book covers an enormous amount of material and is loaded with interesting examples, making it a far better read than other introductory books that never manage to get past basic mechanics.

There is, however, a downside to that. This book isn't well suited to people who are completely new to programming or to people who don't have a fairly extensive physics/math background going in. I have a PhD in physics and there are points in this book that leave me scratching my head. The code examples can be a bit confusing because there are almost no comments. The text explains the methods, but it'd be far easier to follow if the code made some attempt to be understandable on its own.

Hunting the Shadow. By Geoff Thompson

Carl Jung wrote about shadows and described them as part of the unconscious mind consisting of repressed weaknesses, shortcomings, and instincts. He also said: `Everyone carries a shadow," and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.

There is a movie called `Legend of Earthsea', based on the Earthsea books by `Ursula Le Guin', which tells about a young wizard Ged who after using a dangerous spell releases an evil shadow spirit. Throughout the first part of the movie he runs from it while being hunted and almost killed by the spirit. After being saved by his old mentor, the mentor advices him to own the spirit where after Ged hunts the spirit. At the end Ged realises that this spirit is his very own shadow-self the dark part of himself. He names the shadow and thereby dissolves it.

Geoff Thompson, before he was a writer of about 40 books, a filmmaker, a personal growth guru, world famous martial art and self-defence instructor, he was a depressed young man with many shadows. One day he decided to change his life and started to overcome his shadows by facing his fears one by one until he had to face his biggest fear; violent confrontation. This led him to become a doorman in Coventry's most violent nightclubs for nine years.

Within the pages of 10 easy to read chapters Geoff shows you how he overcame his shadows and how you can do the same with yours. The book starts with a nice poem about fear by Hafiz, the author of `The prophet' and a phrase from the `Bhagavad Gita', the holy book of the Hindu's. The book explains about what shadow is, how to recognise, how to hunt and how to dissolve the shadow.

Eventually we learn to recognise those fears as energy and learn to put it use to create great things. Hence the second part of the title; How to turn Fear into Massive Success.

I highly recommend this book to anyone prepared to make the leap of fate and live a courageous life.

Seeky but wonderful Elven children

I am so in love with the Elven Chronicles. This has all the wonderful plots, adventures , love, strength and honor all in one. The entire community with one mission and that is to help their fellow brethren at all cost is awesome. I love the idea that the children were so determine to stop a war that would cost Elves to loss their lives. Serious forgiveness on all the children for handling everything in such a wonderful manner. Such strength from Gabriel and Eden to not seek revenge but mad their angry know but did not cause blood shade or harm. I am really looking forward to the next book.

For the King and the Elven Empire

Ms Abraham did it again. When Gabriel and Edens children who are visiting the High Elven Kingdom come up missing after making a very interesting discovery they are taken to a city that has been hidden for thousands of years. This story has so many things happening I can't list it all. One of my favorite characters in the story is Silas, Elohirs father and the retired King of the High Elves who was following the children and is taken with them. The one who stole the book for me was S'Larea LM to Lothrariel even though she is still a child she brings all the children together and they plot a way to free the Eagle Claw children she can contact them when no one else can. May I say I am very happy I had human children and not very talented elven ones. Of course Gabriel is so upset he calls for the Elven armies to come to his aid. It wonderful fun exciting read. Loved it.

This is the first book I have read by M.A. Abraham and it definitely will not be the last. Welcome to the wonderful world of Elves and how the love for their children will make the parents go to any lengths for them, even calling up an army to help find them after they have disappeared. The Most Important Music Book I Ever Read

My main instrument is the guitar. So how can I say this piano book is the most important music book I ever read? It's because the principles expressed here extend far beyond the piano.

I'm not sure what originally drew me to it in the first place. I think there was a reference to it in another book I was reading. When I saw it had been in print since 1981 that also made an impression. My favorite guitar method book was written in the 1960's and it's outstanding. The longevity of a music book often speaks for it's relevance and value. And I wasn't disappointed in this case.

The premise of the book is that it "rebels" against conventional wisdom, or the established classical learning that prevailed around the time it was written. The main message I carried away after reading it was "if it sounds good it IS good." It doesn't matter whether it's theoretically correct. Just let your ears be the judge. Theory geeks aren't going to like this book at all. But I got it. And it has had a huge impact on my playing ever since.

I read through a long list of theory books before and after reading this book. By the way, this is not a theory book per se. At one point I said "enough is enough" and hung all the theory and just started playing. Something I came to realize about theory is that it's a way of interpreting and "codifying" if you will, what other skilled composers have written and played in the past. It helps to have some kind of starting point, or frame of reference, if you want to write and play yourself. So theory provides a structured way of learning and understanding how music is composed.

But theory will only take you so far. I think way too many people miss this important point. It's theory for the sake of creating and playing music, not theory for the sake of being theoretically correct and perfect. Eventually you have to start trusting your ears and your feelings and see where that takes you with your music. This book helped me do just that. And that is why I say it's the most important music book I ever read.

How to for Popoular Music

The book is for people who already know how to play classical music but never learned how to develop a simple melody line into a more interesting score. This is the province of the fake book. Accordingly, the book could have been titled How to Play from a Fake Book for classical Pianists.

The book is wordy compared to many. But, that can be an advantage. Marx explains each concept and new step in detail so there can be no doubt of your understanding of his point before he moves onward.

I found the attempt at humor to be distracting as well as making the book longer than it had to be. This being a review of the third edition of the November 1976 issue. Also this edition has no index.

What makes the book so useful is that of all the topics that could have been introduced, only those that are relevant to the author's purpose are used and they are used immediately following a bit of theory.

At least one review faults the book since the concept of relative minor chords is not covered in detail. To that I would say that for a book of this nature one does not expect exhaustive explanations of music theory.

It is interesting that modern day popular music traces its routes all the way back to J.S. Bach, Brahms, Beethoven and others as is shown by way of example throughout.

The development uses the concept of stratification of the keyboard first in a simple way and then gradually developing more complexity until finally arriving at the use of the circle of fifths for the last examples.

If you have had problems grasping the concept of syncopation, then on this topic alone the book is worth the price of admission. I say this because that remark applied in spades to me. Marx furthers is explanation of syncopation with examples from Bolero Rhumba and others.

All and all this is a great book for self study. In spite of the somewhat strange humor, I gave the book 5 stars for good clear development; short easily mastered chapters; and good example adaptions as the book proceeds.

A music theory book by any other name...

This book has been around a long time. "More than 30 years in print!" trumpets the cover of the latest edition. I had never looked inside it, though, until it was called to my attention by a gentleman at an after-concert reception, who said he was teaching himself to play from it and who recommended it highly to me.

What I discovered after reading it is that "How to Play the Piano Despite Years of Lessons" is a good but quite specialized instruction book: it is for a person who knows something about music, and who just wants to play stuff: songs everyone knows, standards, Christmas carols, etc. The authors, Ward Cannel and Fred Marx, spend a lot of time trying to demystify the process of doing this and convincing the reader that it's possible. I give them credit for never saying that it's easy or doesn't require effort: despite the new names (musical "strata," using the letter "i" to mean a half-step) sprinkled throughout the text, and "myths" versus "facts" that open each chapter, most of the concepts are ones that will be familiar to anyone who has studied music theory or taken jazz piano instruction, and there is nothing wrong with that: the material is solid, and anyone who sticks with the program and can get around the keyboard with reasonable ease will end up being able to do what the authors claim: play music.

"Reasonable ease," there's the rub: Cannel and Marx spend a lot of time slamming traditional piano instruction, with its ostensibly boring scales and exercises. Admittedly, years of instruction that centers on painfully learning difficult classical pieces without any understanding of how they are constructed has produced a lot of adults who can't play anything now. But there IS a point to scales and exercises: they build physical fluency at the keyboard, the ability to get to the notes you want to play. The major weakness of this book is that it doesn't acknowledge this essential need. My guess is that a lot of folks over the years have understood the concepts presented in this book, but have nevertheless given up in frustration after they've hit that technical wall.

Bottom line: this is not the musical equivalent of a quick weight-loss diet book: some musical knowledge and willingness to put in the time and effort are necessary. I'm biased, but I also think having a supportive piano instructor would help as well.
