Good Content, but Still Horribly Over-priced

Generally, I found this book to be clear and well-written. The illustrations are great and the topics covered are all very interesting. The problem with the book is that the physical craftmanship is terrible. For a book sold at this price (170.00 new), I would expect to be purchasing a durable, well-bound, hardcover book. Unfortunately, despite the fact that the inside cover states it is a hardcover and Amazon lists the ISBN as a hardcover, it is in fact, a paperback. What's more, it is a poorly constructed paperback. McGraw-Hill, is the publisher, and I feel they should be ashamed to distribute such a product - particularly at such an absurd price. I understand that publishers need to charge more for college textbooks in order to make a reasonable profit, but $170.00 for this book is almost criminal.

A bit different from her first two books, and even better.

When Christi told me she was writing a book about a woman in an abusive relationship, I couldn’t imagine any way she would be able to do that. Her stories are about people with strong moral character in pursuit of their dreams; who overcome difficulty with courage and find romance somewhere along the way.
I know a thing or two about abusive people and their targets, having made it the focus of my studies at seminary. They are not romantic, and not entertaining to read about. Or so I thought.
Her story took me on a roller coaster ride from calm anticipation through fear, sadness, tension, anxiety, anger and – total surprise – romance and laughter. Amazing.
All the hallmarks of Christi’s work are in this book – her standards for clean writing and her belief in a code of honor that demands integrity from her main characters, along with the ability to create scenes that feel more real than imagined.
Christi – you nailed it. This is your best work yet

Another fantastic read by Christi Corbett!!

As with all of Christi's books you can tell the amount of time, research and hard work that goes into making her stories as accurate as possible. A Mountain Man's Redemption is about Phillip, a fur trapper in Montana set in the 1880's. As Phillip is on his way to make the last trade of the season, he comes across a young mother and her baby. Will he risk everything that he's worked so hard for in order to help them, or will he leave them to find their own way?

The story moves at a good pace and keeps the reader interested and also has a little suspense. Although it's not a book with Romantic love, the love really pours off the pages. This is a great heart warming story and I loved it!!

This novella deals with the tough subject of abuse. I hope that if someone reads this and find that it speaks to them, that they get help. No one deserves to be made to feel less than wonderful.

A fur-trapper who lives on his own in the Montana wilderness during the winter of 1886 is best served when he has only himself to worry about for survival, but when Philip Grant comes across an unexpected duo in need of help, he must decide whether to put his own life on the line to save them, or walk away.

Philip has had a good haul for a fur-trapper this season, but he soon finds himself with only ten days left to get his furs to the nearest fort, more than eighty miles away. It will be a difficult journey, which must be made quickly. But before long, he finds himself challenged with more than just time and distance. The reader will learn that Philip has his own demons in life to battle, but none more urgent that Hannah whom he discovers battered and beaten and clutching a baby in the middle of a harsh winter. Slowly and out of necessity, Hannah begins to explain the circumstances that have driven her, literally, out into the snow without proper gear for herself or her baby. With Philip’s continued prompting, the young mother confides in the fur-trapper, telling a heartbreaking story of abuse by her husband.

Wife abuse is not your average storyline in a historic novel, but maybe we should see it more often. The story is built upon a strong faith, and is historically accurate. It shows us that what we believe to be a modern problem is not at all. The reader gets a vastly different perspective in this well-written story.

This is a quick read, which is what brings me to my only criticism of the story. In the story’s beginning, Philip discovers a quilt in the snow-covered woods, and although we already know he is behind schedule and has an urgent need to get to Fort Matiley before it closes, which involves crossing “the most rugged mountain peaks in Montana,” he moves far too slowly. He spends too much time deciding whether to find out what’s inside the mysterious quilt. There were a few other points in the story where I felt things needed to move more quickly, given the urgency, too. With that said, this story was nearly flawless in its delivery.

If you’re looking for historical fiction, or a story with a 1880s flare, and the theme of a battered woman won’t deter you, then this is a story worth your time.

Great Art Work

Well I'm a big time fan of the old Capcom so I just had to pick it up. This Devil May Cry 3・1・4・2 Graphic Arts (CAPCOM Official Book) Artworks is a must have over the other 4 separate art books. To me it's better to just buy an all in one art book then to just buy them individually and it cuts down on the cost. It's a great book for any long time Devil May Cry fan. This book has art work from DMC 1,2,3,4 and the anime design work plus more. I would have gave it a higher rating but it wasn't perfect now if it haven't included 2 picture of Ninja Theory's DmC;:Devil may Cry inspired Dante. He is not a part of the Devil May Cry series. DmC: Devil may Cry is it's own entity an dose not belong in this book at all. Other than that I would totally recommend this book to fans of Capcom's old work so just get it you want regret it.

I'm going through a difficult time with my partner at the moment. This book has given me insight and a path to follow to clear away my past issues while at the same time being able to cope with my partners infidelity. I'm still unsure where I want my relationship to go and I am giving myself the space to figure that out. In this month since I have found out about my partner, I haven't had the emotional trauma usually associated with these situations. Instead I have been able to look internally and heal that which needs healing at the time. This has given me a great opportunity for working on my self.

Practical, Systemic Primer on Presentation Skills

This outstanding and aptly named ESL textbook provides a systematic approach for both undergraduate and graduate students. Each self-contained chapter focuses on a common academic presentation, and provides clear guidance so students can develop their oral presentation skills. Further, Giving Academic Presentations offers sensible suggestions for how high-intermediate and advanced English language learners can give engaging, effective presentations that incorporate appropriate academic vocabulary. The detailed assignment checklists and worksheets add extra value for both students and instructors.

I strongly recommended this textbook for both high-intermediate and advanced students in university, community college, or professional programs.

The first chapter is great!

I bought this book for a presentation class for students who were matriculating into graduate schools programs. The first chapter is quite useful and interesting. It deals with giving an introductory speech. The following chapters then deal with giving about an object (boring!), a speech about a concept/definition, a process speech, and a problem-solution speech. There are some useful pieces of information in the book. I liked the information on pronunciation such as pausing, stress, intonation and rhetorical devices such as cleft sentences, rhetorical questions, and using 'Let me.' There is also a variety of rubrics/evaluation forms that are quite good. Unfortunately, it is missing a lot of important information. It doesn't introduce an outline or the components of a speech. There is no video or audio. it barely covers transitions and ways to move from main point to the next. You can find better information on giving a speech on a website from a university in Colorado. You can find the first chapter online, but don't let it fool you because the rest of the chapters are not as good.

An Outstanding Speech Textbook for Advanced English Language Learners

As a university lecturer who has used Giving Academic Presentations for several semesters, I'm quite please to see this updated, modernized version of an outstanding speech textbook for Advanced English language learners and international teaching assistants. The new version contains clearer format, far more attractive pages, and current presentation tips using contemporary technology. (The last version, written almost a decade ago, was clearly showing its age - especially in terms of illustrations.) This practical textbook systematically introduces different types of academic presentations in a clear, concise manner from introductions and object descriptions to term definitions and problem-solution presentations. Students have consistently found it helpful, and I strong recommend it for both undergraduate and graduate international students seeking to improve their public speaking skills. It can also be used for ESL and Speech courses.

A tool for a certain type of reading- not for all types

I'd like to remain anonymous because I've said online before (not here though) that Photoreading did not work for me and I probably turned people away from it with my negative comments. I did the tape course about a year ago and came to the conclusion that it didn't work as well as they claimed. Anyway, I just gave my final speech in speech class and I used what I learned in Photoreading to prepare for them all. Before this semester I really had no way (other than pleasure reading) of testing it. I spent approximately 5 hours this semester preparing all my speeches. Everyone else spent between 30 and 50 hours on the 4 speeches we had to do. I've come to the conclusion that Photoreading is for research reading, not pleasure reading. I feel terrible for badmouthing it before and hope someone will listen to me now when I say IT REALLY DOES WORK if you are reading to solve a specific problem or have specific questions you need answered. The book has alot more information than the course. Most of the course is wasted on relaxation exercises and the guy repeating stuff that's just in the book. Reading 1 book at a time is a total waste of time using this system, in my opinion. It's really good for taking on huge projects requiring reading multiple books and searching within mountains of information. Used on 1 book it can be beaten by normal speedreading. When it comes to pleasure reading, forget it. I just wanted to set the record straight. It's a tool for blasting thru non-pleasure reading and I highly recommend it if you're a student or have a job requiring alot of reading.

It's Voodoo

I've been working at this "PhotoReading" think diligently now for several days. After I first looked at the book, I thought it was the most cockamamie thing I'd ever heard of, but then, perhaps more from hope than common sense, I began to change my mind. It seemed like there might be something to it...that, in theory, it *should* work. So I got the faith, so to speak, and plunged in.
The basics of PhotoReading are simple enough: you preview the text, page through the book rapidly, while maintaining an unfocused gaze at the pages (thus "nonconsciously," as the author puts it, photographing them), let it incubate for a while, then skim the book, and, if necessary, go back and speed read it. Very broadly, that's it.
Right there, it should be apparent that what is giving you a grasp of a text's contents--if anything is--are the repeated trips back into the text, not the hoodoo-ism of PhotoReading itself.
I've tried it. I have not received any benefit whatsoever from the PhotoReading itself, although, of course, repeated trips back to the text have been helpful.
One way the author is able to assert that you can read 25,000 words a minute is by, in fact, urging you NOT to read them. He maintains that only 4-11% of a text contains useful information. REALLY! I don't know what kinds of books he reads, but the books *I* read are hardly so much fluff!
The author seems to give himself a back door, too, in case you can't get PhotoReading to work for you. If PhotoReading doesn't work for you, it's because you care about the outcome. No kidding. In other words, for instance, graduate students who have a pile of books to cleave through should not worry about this...otherwise it won't work. That's like saying, "Don't think about a green banana"--the first thing you think about is a green banana. Of course people are going to be concerned about their mastery of a text...if they weren't, there would be no need for it, and the very people who MOST need to be able to PhotoRead will be least able to make it work.
This is a slim paperback, and an overpriced one at that. There is a measure of slick, salesman-like smarminess to it, too. For instance, the back cover loudly proclaims, "Includes a free coupon for two powerful audio tapes, _Memory Supercharger_ and _Personal Genius_." Okay, cut to the coupon: Immediately, you see that, literally, the COUPON is free (as most in this world are), and that the tapes are FAR from free! Furthermore, throughout the book, and for 7 full pages at the end, Paul Scheele is peddling his other services.
All this notwithstanding, there is *some* useful information here. As an introduction to memory/learning techniques like Mind Mapping, it serves as an adequate introduction. PhotoReading is not any substitute, however, for true speed reading. I will continue to work at this, though, just in case...and if I change my mind about this technique, I will retract what I have said here with the same stridency with which I am offering it now.

The book is good once you sift thru the marketing

I read every review here and couldn't stop laughing.
Photoreading does do something and is definately worth the $(dollar amount). My grades were C's and now I'm easily getting B's and A's with less effort so I'm very happy but it's not anything like they tell you it is. Paul is a cool guy and I think he means well and wants to help people but he took Tony Robbins' idea of modeling just a little too far with this PR course. Every "step" of PR is taken directly from another book and re-named something else. The relaxation process is standard pre-hypnosis stuff, affirmations (more hypnosis), purposes and questions (NLP), photoreading (Mental Photography, Subliminal Dynamics and Brain Management course), Superreading/Dipping/Skittering/RapidReading (standard runofthemill speedreading techniques), Mind Mapping (Tony Buzan's book). There just ain't anything here that's NEW. The Photoreading step really does something but it's not what they say it is. Yes you do get hunches, feelings and intuitive thoughts comming to you after you PR but big deal. You still have to read it all in order to understand those feelings. I think that PR is an excellent study method for students but a poor way to read a book you are interested in. It's great for going thru mountains of information when you know what you're looking for but terrible for reading a book for the purpose of learning new ideas. If you do nothing but Photoread then rapid read books from now on, the $(dollar amount) you spent will be worth it. Running thru the steps has helped my grades and I think SuperReading and dipping is 10 times faster than speedreading. Having all these individual steps together in one book is quite an accomplishment because they all work together (for NLP's auditory, kinesthetic, visual learners) but when all is said and done, if you've just Pr'd/Superread/dipped a book you've not really read all the words and are more than likely missing out of things. I think it's an outstanding study method for something you've READ before and now you're memorizing certain key facts for tests (because that's what I do now) but it's not anything like they say it's like. Syntopic reading is a killer way to do a report though. That chapter alone was worth $100+ to me last semester.

Informative book by an obvious master of the subject

A valuable book, especially for beginning collectors like myself. Well written in a conversational style that welcomes the reader in. It's worth noting that, due to the author's own experience and background, the book focuses primarily upon artifact collecting in the Western U.S. and is therefore of maximum benefit for readers from that region.

A good book, however contains a lot of personal family photos and scenes of camp sites of nil interest or information to anyone but the authors family. Also has a fair amount of pottery information, a strange choice for a book on stone artifacts and arrowheads. Good but not fantastic.

Wow, this book is HOT. I loved the first one, and this one is HOT. There is a lot of sex and spanking, but I love how it all makes sense. All the sex and spankings flow with the story, and the chemistry between Chad and Cassie is dynamite. The other two characters, Marty and Hannah, really come into their own as well. I love Marty, he's like the big lumbering cowboy that can bear hug
like no-one else, and you can really see him. I hope there's a Rules 3. (Hint, Hint). I'm thinking there might be the way this one ended. Great read. Truly great read.

I liked this BDSM romantic suspense novel (that's how I would categorize it)

I choose this rating because at first I thought 4 stars because the who (was the bad guy) was obvious but it was still very suspenseful so I bumped it to a 5. This was the first book ever where I loved the dog as much or more than I loved the leading man (and I am a cat lover so that's a big compliment.) The sex and spankings were hot! The side romance of the secondary characters and their friendship with the main characters was a nice bonus. Note:this was part 2 of this couple's romance and it's best (but not a problem) to read the other book first.
