The Kind of Bible That Has It All

I have used the Harper Study Bible New American Standard Bible since it first was published in 1985. It is the only New American Standard Bible that contains the most literal and accurate text translation of the original Scriptures in the Englsih language. But the Harper Study Bible has much more than the rest of the New American Standard Bibles in print. I will list them here:

1.) The text is in paragraph formate, not columned like most Bibles, enabling easier reading.
2.) Above each paragraph is the subject heading, making it easier to find a topic for study.
3.) The chain reference is on the outside column of the page according to each verse, making it easier to look up.
4.) The words of Christ are in red, placing His words in a category all its own, as it ought to be.
5.) Notes which form a verse by verse commentary are at the bottom of each page written by Dr. Harold Lindsell.
5.) Each book of the Bible is prefaced with a background synopsis of the writer, historical context, and other valuable information.
6.) There is a limited concordance in the back of the Bible which, like any other which all Bible versions, of little use, because it is limited.
7.) There are maps in the back of the Bible which help with the study of God's Word.

Now a word about the late Dr. Harold Lindsell. He was a scholar with a conservative mainline Evangelical approach to God's Word, and therefore his notes througnout the entire Harper Study Bible New American Standard Bible is made with great care by him, balanced, fair, and without the doctrinal fallout of being in this "camp" or "that." He believed in the innerrancy of Scripture, and it is reflected in his writing and in his notes throughout the Scriptures.

This Bible is out of print, and up until earlier in 2013, one was able to purchase a copy of it either in hardbound, or leather for a decent price. I purchased fourteen of them during the first six months of this year, and the price ranges I bought them for were from $18.00 for one in GOOD CONDITION to $150.00 in LIKE NEW CONDITION. I did not pay the exhorbitant artificially inflated prices they're now advertised for. Ironically, I purchased many of my copies from some of the same vendors here at Amazon.com, others I purchased from other used book vendors for reasonable prices.

It is unfortunate that the Harper Study Bible New American Standard Bible is out of print, because it is the only Bible that features side-column reference, paragraphed text with topical headings per paragraph, the words of Christ in red, with commentaries at the bottom of each page, as well as a background to each book of the Bible written by conservative Evangelical Scholar, Dr. Harold Lindsell. None of the new study Bibles in print today offer all of these features in a single volume as does The Harper Study Bible New American Standard Bible.

But there is absolutely no reason for the sellers of these used Bibles to advertise them at inflated prices they've been posted as, especially when these same sellers sold them to people like me just months ago for more reasonably affordable prices. NOT ONE OF THEM HAVE SOLD UNDER THE NEW INFLATED PRICES, and NOT ONE OF THEM WILL SELL UNTIL THESE SELLERS BRING THEIR PRICES DOWN AND CUT THEM BY AT LEAST ONE HALF OF WHAT THEY ARE CURRENTLY ADVERTISED FOR. Really really good book!!!! Finished it in like 2 days easily. The biblical insight is very helpful and would definitely recommend this to anyone trying to live right! I'm in college at the moment so definitely needed something like this to stay focused.

This book is absolutely amazing! Although I am a married woman, I must say I really enjoyed this book. I wish I had read this book when I was younger and dating because that TEMPTATION is a BEAST. I just really wanted to share and bless as many teenagers and single people that I could with this book because I feel like this is a great tool to help with the struggle to fight the temptation that many of us deal with or have dealt with daily. I have purchased more copies for Christmas gifts...and one friend has told me this is this best present she has received thus far! Great job Soror! Your work is truly a blessing.

I had the pleasure of reading the entire Astrology Gems series and was surprised and delighted with both the format and content.

Although the Astrology Gems series are small gift books, they are jam packed with practical, eerily incisive information. Some of the tidbits found in the Cancer book include:

I learned a few things

This book has good concise content on the sign. I've read about the Taurus in the past but learned a good deal more from this book.

Be aware that this book is a physically small book. The size was disclosed in the description but I missed that. I was taken aback when it arrived because it's not what I expected. I usually perceive this type of tiny books to be light on content. This book has more depth than that.

For a long time I've been reading books as a beginner / advanced Arduino , especially to meet the training needs of people who are new , including very early levels . It is not easy to have a good guide to all the possibilities of Arduino while it easy to assimilate by readers. In this book I found all this and more. All kinds of examples that introduce from the simplest to the most complicated work , easy to digest and implement that cover all needs. A global version of all well explained possibilities. I highly recommend it .

Outstanding - revelations about how Christianity changed the lives of children

Christianity revolutionized the treatment of children in the ancient world. Perhaps the most spectacular alteration was in the use of children as sexual playthings. Both ancient Greece and ancient Rome regarded using little boys, especially slaves, or the children of the poor, as objects of desire.

A slave had no rights over his body, and it was regarded as legal and not immoral in the least to use the slave sexually. Both little boys and little girls were used sexually, although it appears little boys were preferred. The boys were considered of interest sexually until they sprouted body hair, which gives some idea of the age of the children abused. After the master had used the slave, the slave could also obtain money for his master by being sent to one of the many boy brothels in Rome. (Pick up a copy of "The Economy of Prostitution in Rome" for a fuller treatment).

Christianity, of course, viewed this as utterly immoral. Many Christians wrote scathing denunciations of such practices, such as Tatian, who pointed out that, at least in this matter, the barbarians, whose cultures despised such things, were more moral. Tatian bitterly criticized "the Romans...for gathering herds of boys for this purpose" (p 230).

In the area of protecting children "from sexual advances...may be the one area of morality in which early Christianity was truly counter-cultural" (p 231).

The ancient world, including the Second Temple Jews, regarded a girl as ready for marriage between the ages of 12 to 14. Boys, on the other hand, appear to have been older at the age of marriage, perhaps in the late teens or early twenties. This seems to have held true across all the cultures in the Roman empire.

Where Jewish and later Christians differed from the other cultures was the importance they placed on the child. "In significant strands of Judaism, the family is based upon the child" (p 72). Because every child had an immortal soul, Christians taught their children early the truths of Christianity and brought them to Christian gatherings to participate. "The process of socializing children into the Christian Church was closely related to the quality and extent of the religious education and formation the children received" (p 271).

They also strove to keep their children from the immoral influences all around them. John Chrysostrom insisted young men should be kept away from the theater, for example, since ''the sight of naked women uttering shameful words'" (p 157) should be avoided. Chrysostrom urged boys to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays, pray, and to be taught to fear hell.

Children had toys and games similar to many today. One I had never heard of was tying a rattle around the neck of a baby. Every time the baby moved, the rattle would jingle and amuse the child. Tops, hoops, balls, and dolls were all available, although many of the dolls appear to be based on pagan gods, and therefore were likely unused by Christian children.

I would also strongly recommend the book "When Children Became People", which also deals with the changes Christianity brought to the ancient world for children.
