About the Author
Katherine Kurtz has been writing fantasy novels for well over three decades. Slightly dated but still enjoyable launching book for the Deryni universe.

This book was the first one Kurtz wrote nearly 40 years ago, and there are moments when the book does reflect that. There is usage of "magical" terminology and actions (like poetic spells) that aren't used in her subsequently written books.

Plot: The young heir to the kingdom of Gwynedd (an alternate universe equivalent to Britain, essentially), Prince Kelson, watches helplessly as his father dies of an apparent heart attack during a hunting expedition. In short order a rival heir to Kelson's throne (from a usurping dynasty who'd ruled Gwynedd centuries earlier) threatens his life and those of the rest of his family, the Church (and Kelson's mother) want his father's best friend killed because of his magical heritage, and Kelson comes to realize some surprising things about his own heritage.

This book and its two sequels in this trilogy (Deryni Checkmate and Deryni Rising) were both re-released a few years ago with some minor edits and plot adjustments to reflect later-written books.

25 years later... still a strong (if imperfect) novel!

You know the experience of going back to something you loved as an adolescent and discovering it to be completely execrable garbage?

Fortunately, that's not the case with Deryni Rising.

It's not without flaws, however. One reviewer gives it a one star review for the absolute good / absolute evil characters, and I can't dispute the criticism. Nuance of motive is not, at least in this first volume, in Kurtz' repertoire.

In fact, breaking things down stylistically, there is a lot to be disappointed in with this novel, so it is a testament to the power of her narrative that it is, in fact, a real page turner.

Kelson Haldane's father, the King, is killed in the prologue, and the subsequent novel covers the days to Kelson's coronation. Surrounded by treachery, ignorance, and general political scheming, there's a lot that can go wrong. It doesn't help that Kelson's most trusted advisor, Alaric Morgan, is a half-breed member of an almost-outlawed race with magic powers, and that virtually everyone is working on Morgan's downfall. This includes Kelson's mother, who is the most viciously anti-Deryni activist in the book. And, of course there is a usurper in the wings, herself a full Deryni sorceress, sowing discord and preparing for the restoration of a Deryni evil empire.

Reading this you can see influences into both Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.

Kurtz' style improves over the course of subsequent books: this is not just a first novel, it is a first novel sold-before-written, dashed off in a time when the bar for quality fiction in fantasy was non-existent.

Some things to gloss over: one dimensional characters. Frustrating and willful ignorance. Characters consistently jumping to untenable conclusions. Deus ex Machina solutions. Over-the-top descriptions (everyone is apparently astoundingly good looking in this world).

Some things to notice: great descriptions of ecclesiastical protocol. Beautiful descriptions of clothing. Gradual revelation of deeper mystery.

And yet, it is immensely readable. Gripping. Fun. And sets the stage very well for the books that follow.

A Classic from the 70s that doesn't hold up

Kurtz' Deryni novels were considered top notch when they were written in the 70s, but they haven't aged well. The characters are thinly drawn and rely heavily on stereotypes, with motives thinly sketched, and character development, such as it is, told rather than shown. The main characters never truly seem to be in danger, because every time they are, one of them suddenly manifests new magical abilities that save the day. Even the climactic duel at the end is resolved with this sort of deus ex machina device. It's her first novel, and it shows.

Kurtz claims to have done graduate work in history, but wouldn't know it from the novel. Ostensibly set in a high medieval society, the world is actually a pastiche of generic fantasy Europe with details drawn from as late as the 20th century (such as overstuffed chairs and crystal decanters). Details like that were acceptable when fantasy literature was still maturing, but today it reads like second-rate young adult literature.

A Real Eye Opener

I read Lillian Schlissel's book, Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey, years ago & was profoundly impacted. I knew it was tough, I didn't realize how tough. I came across this after reading The Blue Tattoo & enjoyed it. Every entry gives a slightly different twist on the hardship & horror that these remarkable people experienced & endured to develop our country. We owe them such a debt of gratitude & respect. I think it would be good if at least one of these books were required reading in high school because I think most people have no idea.

Love, love, love women's diaries during the 1800's. They give a true picture of what women's struggles were. When you have read several diaries you realize women were the survivors and worked harder then the men. Sorry men it is just a fact. Some books are better than others, but you are literally reading about someone else's life. Diaries are very encouraging as even though times can be tough now-just surviving the day and burying so many children puts current problems into perspective.

It seems to be a very accurat dialogue of info on many of our American frontier travels out west to many destinations. The book is in very good condition. It has references between diarys on every writer and person in the stories, explaining relationships in friends and families. A keeper as far as holding on to history in the making in America. It could be used for genealogy.

About the Author
Algis Budrys (1931–2008) was born in Königsberg, East Prussia, where his father served in the Lithuanian diplomatic corps. The family came to the United States when Budrys was five years old. A Renaissance man, he wrote stories and novels, and was an editor, critic, and reviewer, a teacher of aspiring writers, and a publisher. In the 1960s Budrys worked in public relations, advertising products such as pickles, tuna fish, and four-wheel-drive vehicles. His science fiction novels include Rogue Moon, Hard Landing, Falling Torch, and many others. His Cold War science fiction thriller Who? was adapted for the screen, and he received many award nominations for his work. Budrys was married to his wife, Edna, for almost fifty-four years.

First rate, thought provoking sci fi at its best!

The creation of human replicants allows for the study of a mysterious alien artifact on the moon. The humans and their alter ego replicants become one mentally, and both share the experience when one enters the artifact, in which all who enter ultimately die. The remaining human can then describe what the other saw and felt inside, allowing further study of the artifact. When the remaining humans are unable to communicate the information, due to insanity brought on by the memory experience of dying, a search begins for a man who can withstand the experience. That search brings together some fascinating characters, who find that facing the project is less difficult than facing their own demons, brought out fully during participation in the project. The character interactions and development are superb, and ultimately elevate this gripping story to the highest level. Sci-fi as a character study of men who live dangerously

During science fiction's Golden Age, it was almost taken for granted that the characters of sci-fi were the same characters found in fantasy: consummate wizards who could solve any problem, helpless damsels in distress, and intrepid heroes who could slay the toughest dragon. True, the wizard wore a lab coat rather than a pointed hat, and the hero flew a rocket ship instead of riding a white horse, but at essence, they were the same types: flat, flawless, and wholly unbelievable. Budrys explodes the myth in this painfully honest look at what drives the kind of man who would risk his life, and the lives of others, in the name of Science.
Dr Edward Hawks heads a project that, through the miracle of teleportation, puts men on the moon. He does this by transmitting taped copies of human beings across the void, where the men are then reconstructed alive from this data. Communication is handled by an inherent psychic link between the original and his copy. With unique insight, Budrys sees this journey as a one-way trip, since the men so sent are mere duplicates of their earth-side counterparts, with no lives of their very own to come back to. Thus Hawks' machine creates life, but it is life that has no real place in our world.
While exploring the moon, these doomed men have found an inexplicable artifact. Attempts to enter this structure and learn its secrets have always resulted in the demise of the explorer. And staying in constant contact with "themselves" as they die again and again has taken a tragic toll upon even the hardened military men whose avatars are doing the investigating. So Director of Personnel Vincent Connington chooses fearless tough guy adventurer Al Barker for the job. But how will Al react to not just facing death, but actually experiencing it, dying day after day? And what of his beautiful and flirtatious girlfriend Claire, whose coquettish ways threaten to undermine the entire project? If life is this cheap, then how valuable are relationships?
Originally published in the early sixties, perhaps in response to the Nedelin catastrophe in which 126 people were killed on a Soviet launch pad, this short but strangely gripping novel focuses on the people who undertake dangerous ventures, rather than on the science behind this sketchily-drawn quest. The point of view usually lies with Hawks, and his relationships with Al, whom he sends to his death on a daily basis, and Claire, who seems anxious to shatter his inscrutable composure. Fans of whiz-bang science fiction may be disappointed by the fairly weak and dated explanations of the science involved, and the fact that many of the more scientific questions remain unresolved at the end. But despite the outrageousness of the back story, this is a unique, gripping, and very hard-boiled book that takes a hard if somewhat simplistic look at what drives the people who do dangerous work.

Character studies and science philosophy in a fictional setting.

Pre-dating Arthur C Clarke's alien monolith in "2001: A Space Odyssey" by almost a decade, "Rogue Moon" tells of an equally bizarre alien construct on the moon called simply "the Formation". Dr Edward Hawks, a ruthless scientist is determined, at any cost, to plum the depths of the Formation and to puzzle out its origin and purpose, by sending a steady stream of hapless volunteers on a deadly one-way mission of exploration to the moon. Dr Hawks' recently built matter transmission device is capable of sending an exact duplicate of someone to the moon and into the Formation. The "original" of these intrepid explorers is held on earth in a type of stasis - a state of deep sensory deprivation - until the duplicate is killed in the maze inside the Formation. This frequently happens within minutes of their arrival on the moon. Although the nature of the process of matter duplication and transmission allows the original to share the experiences of his duplicate, the experience is so powerful as to drive every volunteer to hopeless insanity when they awake after the death of their doppelgänger.

Al Barker is an adventurer and utterly self-centered thrill-seeker - one might almost say, a sociopathic A-personality suicidally driven to ever greater heights of physical achievement regardless of the potential cost to himself and those around him. Hawks realizes that Barker may be the only person in the world with the physical strength and the ability to negotiate the intractable puzzles of the Formation combined with the mental strength to retain his sanity in the doing. Sure enough, a string of repeat missions ends in the death of Barker's duplicate but each trip finds him delving deeper and deeper into the mysterious path through the Formation. Likewise, against all odds, the original Barker remains sane and when he awakes, he is able to pass on the intelligence of his foray into the Formation to Hawks.

For this reader, it was a matter of some frustration to discover that even at the end of the story, the nature and purpose of the Formation remained undisclosed. While the hypothesized scientific nature of Hawks' matter-transmission device was discussed at considerable length, it became clear by the end of the novel that aliens, the Formation and science were not really the main themes of Budrys' "Rogue Moon" at all. The story was really an extended essay probing the nature of the ethics of scientific discovery and exploration. In addition, Budrys spent considerable effort talking about the philosophy of matter transmission and the possible meaning of a relationship between humanity and an alien species capable of creating a device like the Formation.

While much of this philosophical navel-gazing is delivered via stiff-necked dialogue between characters who would now seem very dated and out of place in this century, "Rogue Moon" does deserve kudos for having the courage to place theme over plot in a genre that is much better known for its guns ablaze space opera approach. I don't think I'd go quite so far as to call it the masterpiece that some have labeled it but "Rogue Moon" is worthy of a sci-fi fan's time and effort and deserves a place in any well-stocked library of classic science fiction.

PETER C. BISHOP is an Associate Professor of Strategic Foresight and Director of the Graduate Program in Futures Studies at the
University of Houston, USA. He arrived there in 2005, having taught futures studies at the University of Houston-Clear Lake
campus since 1982. He received his doctorate in sociology From Michigan State University in 1974.

ANDY HINES is Lecturer and Executive-in-Residence at the University of Houston's Graduate Program in Futures Studies,
USA, where he graduated in 1991 and now speaks and consults through Hinesight. He has worked as an organizational futurist

Master the Craft of Foresight

For over 35 years the University of Houston has offered a masters program to train futurists. Now two professors from that program have authored a seminal book on the practice of strategic foresight for any trend analyst, manager or consultant who wants an overview of the field. This book is broken down into three parts, 1) how to understand the future through models, systems and theory, 2) how to map a range of futures through research, forecasting and scenarios, and 3) how to influence the future through leadership, vision, planning, and change management. Each chapter introduces a foresight practice, describes its history, explains its key concepts, and considers how it is taught. Resources are also annotated for further study. In keeping with its title, _Teaching about the Future_ is also designed to help educators create their own courses based on a core curriculum that has shaped the futures field. For that audience more support could have been offered through learning objectives for modules of study or competencies of foresight professionals. Beyond this omission, the book contains unique forms that support two key deliverables that foresight professionals provide clients: a horizon scanning report and a forecasting template. If you are serious about mastering the craft of foresight, _Teaching about the Future_ is worth the price. It should be widely used in any futures studies course in a university context, in any MBA program that does environmental analysis, or by any executive development program focused on strategic thinking and adaptive planning.

Learn the fundamental from a true authority

I watched and worked with Andy Hines on futures projects over several years. It was no surprise that he set out to define the full landscape of futures work. It's an interesting read. But most importantly, I think the tools and examples will give the reader an authoritative vocabulary on how to do this work in practice. I work in corporate strategy and find that many people in corporate life either just lean on consultans or buy reports to guide them on defining their future. And the results usually disappoint. I think this book helps you either define the work of others, or guide you to successful and convincing internal studies.

Injury and Violence Prevention Future Forecasting

What value does future forecasting offer Injury and Violence Prevention, (IVP)? For today’s and tomorrows’ extremely dramatic social changes; we must study, teach and use future forecasting. This process is more than developing a program plan, budget, evaluations; a significant complex shift in our IVP paradigms (1).

Over many decades, researcher, practitioners and advocates published IVP related journal articles on evaluating the causes and prevention of accidents and injury; however, much without incorporating any framework forecasting specifications for the drivers of change of history, technology, politics, psychology, economic and sociology – that trump that era’s science and art of evaluation (2). Moreover, few attempted to minimize those limitations by incorporating, for future changes, the earlier findings on in vivo dynamic discontinuities, into their developed plan. Today’s journal articles about violence prevention research and practice (3) face similar prior eras’ published difficulties of evaluating sociological limits many without framework forecasting projects, up front. While our classical physical public health sciences offer much cleaner evidence-based evaluations for applied translational sciences, projecting the future impacts of IVP , without projecting use of the behavioral sciences, will continue to limit IVP outcomes or newer insights for our translational research and practice.

During spring 2016, I, appreciatively, audited and, at times, mentored students at Professor David Hochfelder’s SUNY-Alb History 290: History and Future. Several students chose final project papers that apply historical skills to analyze probable future social issues, with implications that help create preferred futures for public health IVP: Concussions, opiates / heroin drug incarcerations, and violence by social media. The course syllabus summarized requirements and deadlines for each phases of the final project: Annotated bibliography from websites, publications, newspapers; a submitted weekly scanning blog of chosen sources, a 4-6 pages trend analysis of ‘drivers’, and 3-5 scenarios exploring how the subject might evolve in the next five, ten and fifty years and citing which scenarios are most probable; which are the students’ researched preferred outcome, including “black swan” scenarios.

Haddon, the father of modern injury epidemiology, and others, were seminal to lead our field .His lenses were outside the classical box of cause and prevention as he creatively linked his medical background to his engineering expertise for our modern IVP epidemiology and practices. So, must we today, also track our repeated past, learn from other discipline’s frameworks, analyze drivers and explore how the subject might develop for probable and preferred outcomes. We must publish relevant past and present historiographies for future policy debates, enhance citizenship and help analyze and create real world preferred futures.

About the Author

Elizabeth V. August, MD (Hoboken, NJ) is a board certified family physician and currently serves as Chief Medical Officer of Bergen County, Riverside Medical Group. Dr. August was the former Chief Resident of Family Medicine at Hoboken University Medical Center.

Conrad Fischer, MD (New York, NY), is one of the most experienced educators in medicine today. He is Associate Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Pharmacology at Touro College of Medicine. His breadth of teaching includes medical students, USMLE prep, and Specialty Board exams. He has seven "Teacher of the Year" awards over the last ten years. In addition, Dr. Fischer was formerly the Associate Chief of Medicine for Educational and Academic Activities at SUNY Downstate School of Medicine. Dr. Fischer has been Chairman of Medicine for Kaplan Medical since 1999, and has held Residency Program Director positions at both Maimonides Medical Center and Flushing Hospital in New York City.

Not worth it.

The book is formatted in a way to pad the page count. out of the 173 pages there's less than 40 pages of actual information. Most of it is big pictures (for example a picture of a macrosomic baby that takes up 3/4 of a page, how is that high yield in any way) which means there's whole pages that are just low yield drawings or basic science diagrams and there's a lot of black pages because whenever a chapter ends in the right hand page the next page is blank and it happens often (example between page 97 and 104 there's only 3 pages of information, one page only has a picture of the McRobert's Maneuver, 3 pages are blank and the other is the header for the next section.) This could've easily been added to another CCS book. Mot worth the money at all. To make things worse some of the information is not complete. Uworld does a better job with the Ectopic pregnancy case for example.

I'm happy with this book because I was able to benefit from reading through cases and understanding the linearity in management, but I don't think it's worth the money. The book is pretty tiny, and there's not much different in it than what is in the UWorld CCS cases. The idea behind the book is that it gives you a working understanding of ob/gyn that you need for general practice, but if you've done a solid core ob/gyn rotation in medical school or in an externship, there shouldn't be anything on step 3 that you haven't seen before. It's a thorough book, but I'll probably resell it. It's certainly not a keepsake like FA Step 1 or anything.

This book is a great primer on many different aspects of Hot Rod body construction techniques,including metal fabrication tips,and an overview of some of the necessary tools.Though you may not be ready to scratch build a Rod after reading this book,it definitely gives a good,clear insight into the basic skills required.
