I am admittedly not a huge fan of Fitzgerald's work, although I can and do appreciate his sharp wit that informs observations and commentary about behavior and motivations. What stands out most sharply is the fact that human behavior and desires have not changed: the characters in this story are self-absorbed, obsessed with fitting in, vary in their social skills and awareness, and are far too prone to influence from those on the "higher rungs" of the social ladder.

There are several moments to enjoy in this story: proclamations about the psychology of attracting men and developing charm that fly from Marjorie's lips are clever and the connection between letters Fitzgerald sent with advice to his sister are abundantly clear. I cannot help but think that his advice did contain some of the lesson that is visited on both cousins at the end, and presenting a story with such a clever conclusion, slightly devious and wholly appropriate for the character of Bernice was satisfying.

The narration provided by Lee Ann Howlett presented the story and the characters in a cleanly presented form: small tonal distinctions delineated the characters from one another and the narrative in a well-modulated presentation. Finely nuanced inflections provide verbal clues to the attitudes and personalities of the characters, from hesitancy to offhanded bravado, each was a perfectly voiced addition to the written text.

This is one of the stories that become the definition of a classic short: the setting is nearly a century prior, but the characters and people are real and easy to relate to with a modern eye. This should be your introduction to Fitzgerald's writing, short, sweet and beautiful prose in his style, but not so long as to feel overwhelming.

"Bernice had all the sensations of Marie Antoinette bound for the guillotine in a tumbrel. Vaguely she wondered why she did not cry out that it was all a mistake. It was all she could do to keep from clutching her hair with both hands to protect it from the suddenly hostile world."

I read F. Scott's Fitzgerald's short story "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" in high school. I loved it! After reading it again twenty plus years later - the angst, Marjorie, and Bernice - I still love this short story set in the Roaring Twenties.

Fitzgerald was inspired by letters to his younger sister on how to be more attractive to men. We see the sexism of the time - the cattiness and manipulations of teens, the peer pressure - which are told through third person omniscient narrative.

The characters live in upper crust society and they can be perceived as shallow people, but Bernice is the underdog in the story. She doesn't understand why she doesn't fit in with Marjories friends, and the need to see her rise above Marjorie's scathing review of her sucks us into the story.

I'm not too sure about Fitzgerald's characterization of Marjorie. She sounds like a man in a woman's body, instead of a behaving like a forward-thinking female. It makes me wonder how much Fitzgerald is represented in Majorie. Despite my little issue, this short story, which was first posted in The Saturday Evening Post in 1920, is a classic!

INTRODUCTION

In a day when unprecedented numbers of people have a form of religion while at the same time the church seems unable to stem the rising tide of degeneracy that threatens the land, the question might be raised: Why this paradox? Should not the church have influence for righteousness in proportion to her numbers? However one may seek to answer this question, it is obvious that what we need is not more religion, but more power. In short, we need real revival.

For this reason, the account after spontaneous revivals at Asbury College in 1950 and 1958 is very timely and provocative of thought. It shows what God can do when given a chance. The particular manifestations of these visitations of God may differ from others, for no two revivals are exactly alike. However, basic principles are reflected here which recur in all genuine spiritual awakenings. The sense of need, effectual prayer, confession and repentance, imparting of new life, infilling of the Holy Spirit and compulsion to tell the good news to others; these are relevant to every age.

The authors of these stories are well-qualified to speak, having experienced the events which they describe. Henry C. James, an alumnus, was himself converted during the revival of 1950; and Paul Rader, student leader on the Asbury campuses, was an active participant in the 1958 awakening. They are thus enabled through their close association with these revivals to transmit much of the moving drama of those days.

It is my hope that those who read these pages will catch something of the spirit which motivated its writing. In the late 9th Century, under King Alfred the Great of England, scholars compiled a history of the island from the invasion by Julius Caesar to 891. Great translation, great history

There are few works like this. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is perhaps the sole greatest written work to tell the history of England during the "Dark Ages." Bede's histories also compare nicely. But this work is brilliant, and covers everything from the ethnic identities of different people in England to the conversion of the various peoples to Christianity, from the wars with the Vikings to the supersititions of the time.

Like the Royal Frankish Annals, a comparable work from medieval France and Germany, this chronicle covers the history of a people year by year, telling the important events of each year. Anyone interested in Vikings, Anglo-Saxon England, or the Celts should study this text.

The translation also is solid, and so far, holds up to the best of my knowledge regarding the original manuscripts. Footnotes also help clarify points of vaguery.

Anglo Saxon Chronicles

This is a "just the facts, ma'am" book. It tells what happened, when, where, & to whom. There is some detail (more in later years), but mostly it's quite to-the-point. Still, it's a fascinating book. It is mostly updated to modern English, but I had to Google unfamiliar words & terms periodically. The book would have been a bit easier to read if a glossery of terms that don't translate well to modern English had been included. Otherwise, this book was well worth the money.

About the Author

Michael J. Anthony (Ph.D. Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Ph.D. Claremont Graduate School) is currently serving as the president of Hume Ministries located in California. In addition, he is research professor of Christian Education at Biola University/Talbot School of Theology where he served for 27 years. He has been the president of the North American Professors of Christian Education on three occasions.

Dr. Michelle Anthony is family ministry ambassador at Rock Harbor Church in Costa Mesa, CA., and family ministry architect for David C. Cook. She earned her B.A. from Biola University in Christian Education and her M.A. in Christian Education with an emphasis in Theology from Talbot Theological Seminary. She also earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Southern Seminary. She has written over a dozen resources in Children's/Youth ministries and Christian education and enjoys teaching, speaking, and serving in missions abroad.

Looking to refine your understanding of family ministry?

This practical book discusses current family dynamics, the timeless message of Scripture on the thology of the family (particularly as it relates to the community of faith) and the role of the family in the contemporary church.

The first section examines the families of today, looking at the particular challenges which modern families face.

The second section examines the teachings of both the Old and New Testament on the family.

The third section examines how the church and families can best work together so that parents may be equipped as spiritual leaders within their own homes.
